Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the chat bombs, called zingy, delightful flavour bombs, though one reviewer notes a sharing platter for two came with five that must be eaten whole and could not be split evenly. Close behind are the rich house lamb curry, described as a stew clearly simmered for ages, and the gunpowder chicken and wings. Black dal, garlic paratha, open roti and mango lassis also get named, along with the gulab and brownie for dessert. The old bank setting, with its vaulted ceiling, marble columns, rope swing chairs and fairy lights, is called stunning, and servers are repeatedly described as friendly and helpful. Complaints are scattered but specific. One reviewer found the butter chicken only mildly spicy, bordering on bland, another thought five small prawns in a curry was stingy, and one did not enjoy the fenugreek kissed fries. A reviewer also warns that everything is dressed with fresh coriander. One hen party recalls a server making a mocktail just for the bride to be.

“Went here last night for the first time and we was blown away! Absolutely stunning place and it’s very fairytale ish with lights all over and lit candles. The food was great and the lamb was delicious! Not a lamb lover but ate a lot of it last night. The staff were lovely and we got plenty of food, it was 40pp and we ordered nann separately, you get a choice of house wine beer Prosecco or a non alcoholic with the deal. Very cozy and close to city x will be back soon!”

“Visited with my husband and daughter, the decor is lovely, but not particularly comfortable. The food was tasty, however although it was explained that the portion sizes are small, we felt 5 small prawns in a curry was a little stingy. Also beware that everything is dressed with fresh coriander, so if you are not a fan you may not enjoy it.”

“First time visiting Mowgli and definitely not disappointed. We were a tad early but taken straight in and we had a choice of seats which was nice. Set in the old Clydesdale Bank it was the perfect place for this very informal setting. It’s difficult to review food as everyone’s taste is different but we selected a choice of starter, street food and sides. We didn’t pick a house curry but as we are going back again we will have one or two. The Chat Bombs, sticky wings and open Roti were a delight as was the gunpowder chicken. Portion size is perfect and we had to have a sweet. My Gulab was perfect and my wife had the Brownie which certainly didn’t hit the sides. The staff were fabulous and gave us plenty of time to order, were attentive throughout. Overall it was a super experience with excellent food in a lovely environment.”

“While the restaurant itself exuded a wonderful vibe and the staff were exceptionally welcoming and efficient, the food, particularly the butter chicken, left much to be desired. From the perspective of spices, the butter chicken registered as only mildly spicy, bordering on bland. I had anticipated a richer, more buttery texture and a noticeable kick of spice, but the dish fell short of these expectations. However, the atmosphere was undeniably great, contributing significantly to an amazing overall vibe. The inviting setting and the excellent service provided by the staff were definite highlights. Also they do charge optional service tax of 10% which you can choose to not pay.”

“A very good experience overall and perfect place to have a first dinner in Edinburgh. Great service from Zander. The staff in general were very friendly. The interior of the restaurant is quite cool. Favourite items tried: black dal, garlic paratha and gunpowder wings.”
Highlights
“Mowgli is all about how Indians eat at home and on their streets. She was born to feed the raw need Indians have for tiffins full of fresh bright intense flavour. Mowgli is not about the intimate, hushed dining experience. It is about the smash and grab zing of healthy, light, virtuosic herbs and spices. The simple dishes of a Mowgli menu are a million miles away from the curry stereotype. These dishes convey the truth that real Indian food is extremely healthy, often vegan and always packed with fresh flavour.”
