Quick info
About Hot Kung Fu
Hot Kung Fu is a Chinese takeaway on Newington Rd in Edinburgh, open Tuesday to Sunday in the evenings only and closed on Mondays. The kitchen points first-time customers to the Cantonese Roast Duck & Char-Siu. Beyond that, the menu runs to a wide range of chow mein dishes, with chicken chow mein among them, plus soups and kung fu chicken. Portions come in sizes, so a medium covers one person and a large suits sharing.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the chips and chicken fried rice, one calling the chips so crispy that nothing similar compares in Newington. Chicken chow mein and an egg fried rice, chips and curry sauce combo also earn approval. Fast delivery that arrives piping hot recurs, along with friendly counter staff. Diners also single out the apple fritters with nutmeg and syrup, big juicy mussels and chicken mushroom soup. Several say medium portions are plenty. Complaints are specific: beef and broccoli described as grey and chewy, charsiu with pak choi heavy with cooking wine, and dishes that differ from what their names suggest. One reviewer says a request for a little soy sauce left the meal drowned, and another describes a driver leaving food at the bottom of the stairs and an annoyed voicemail. One order that arrived missing an item was brought to the door afterward without being asked.

“Nice food but rude delivery driver. Came half hour early. Left food at bottom of stair. Too lazy to come up 2 flights and knock on my door. He didn't buzz my flat. I tested it and it was working. Left me voicemail sounded annoyed and said 'whats wrong with you man'. Think I'll be going elsewhere in future. I use them a lot so it's a pity. Always friendly service in the shop. Their apple fritters are to die for btw. Fresh apple, taste like nutmeg added. And lovely syrup.”

“Ordered online via the website - got the chicken chow mein, and the egg fried rice, chips & curry sauce combo which came to £10.54 with a 20% discount, so brilliant value for money. Food was good, hit the spot! Server at the desk was friendly, place has a warm atmosphere. Will order again for sure!”

“Do not ask for soy sauce on your food! It normally comes as a bottle of soy sauce you buy extra, but I was only passing through and just wanted a little with my meal. She said she would put a little on top. When I got back to my room and opened it, it was absolutely drowned in soy sauce and was absolutely awful. I'm sure it would have been lovely otherwise”

“After our favorite Chinese takeaway closed down, we struggled to find a new one that lived up to our expectations. After several disappointing experiences, we decided to try Hot Kung Fu based on recommendations from a few Facebook groups—and we’re so glad we did! The food was fantastic—fresh, flavorful, and high quality, especially for a takeaway. Delivery was incredibly fast, and even when they accidentally missed an item from our order, they made it right without us having to ask. About 30 minutes later, they showed up at our door with the missing item, which was a really nice surprise. We’re thrilled to have finally found a go-to Chinese takeaway we can trust again. Of course, we’ll see how things go over time, but based on this first experience, we’re really happy and excited to order again!”

“Very reasonably priced and delicious food. It's my Friday treat every week. Staff are super friendly and nice. Love the chicken fried rice and their chips are just so crispy and nice ...can't find a similar quality elsewhere in Newington! Every once in a while I'm absurdly lazy and order delivery and it's really fast and still piping hot when it gets here”
