Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the duck, described as succulent and as good as any others tried, with a half duck ordered at lunch and again at a late Monday sitting. Close behind are the spring rolls, called crisp outside and moist inside, and the Mongolian fried lamb. Reviewers also name the Singapore noodles, lemon and mango chicken, mapo tofu, beef with black bean paste, spicy shredded crispy beef in chilli sauce, and the soups, with one child calling the soup "bussin". The set lunch menu draws praise for massive portions, and several describe a friendly, family-run welcome. Some mention the viral video that brought them in, and one asks for patience because the place was short staffed. The main complaint comes from one reviewer who found the Singapore noodles bland and the pork charsui poor, with only a few pineapple chunks, and said they would not order again. Another found the added dumplings very greasy. A group of eleven drank the place dry of Tsingtao and still got through about ten dishes.

“Went in after reading reviews. Place looked tired so opted for takeout. Staff were very pleasant and took the order with clear instructions and chilli oil was also added. However, the Singapore noodles I ordered was quite possibly the most bland and disgusting I’ve ever had. The pork charsui was also quite poor it was quite clear it was very lazily put together with a few pineapple chucks thrown in! If the chef is reading this, shame on you for allowing such food to leave your kitchen. Even bland Chinese buffets serve better noodles! Really very disappointing and will never eat/order from here again. One to avoid.”

“Visiting in town from Colorado and I tried the spicy shredded crispy beef in chilli sauce it was super good. I would highly recommend checking out China Star. Best meal I've had since I arrived in the UK! If I were local, I'd be a regular for sure!”

“Booked for a team dinner, 11 of us in the group. The service was great, no delays with food and spirits were high. Managed to drink them dry of Tsingtao and got to try 10 or so dishes between us. They know it’s work and progress, Lisa has pivoted her life now to commit everything to this so can’t fault the effort here. Lots of improvements already and will hopefully see this place become part of the Edinburgh Chinese restaurant top scene. The soups were great, Singapore noodles and lemon / mango chicken all solid too. Duck is as good as any others we’ve tried and the portions were great value for money.”

“Travelling in Edinburgh and found China Star for lunch. They do offer set lunch menu, which features classical dish options. The mapo tofu and beef with black bean paste we ordered are delicious. Recommended for people who is around and looking for a bite of classic taste of Chinese cuisine.”
