About The Stables at Mortonhall - Bar & Restaurant

The Stables at Mortonhall is a pub and restaurant in Edinburgh, at 50 Mortonhall Gate, housed in a converted old stable with exposed stone walls and timber-beamed ceilings. The building is set around a sheltered courtyard, and the main bar has tables beside a log fire. The menu includes a Sunday roast, and the bar pours wines, spirits and beers. The Saddle Room is a separate function space with booths, round tables and room to mingle. It hosts birthdays, funeral teas and small gatherings of roughly 25 to 50 guests, served with sandwiches, sausage rolls and tea or a buffet. Larger groups can use it, so it suits parties that need more room than the bar offers. The pub takes walk-ins. A car park serves the venue, and a walk nearby leads to highland cows.

Good to know

“The Stables at Mortonhall - Bar & Restaurant Inside the archway at the Mortonhall Stable Courtyard you will find the Stable Bar which offers a wonderful family dining experience coupled with a range of wines, spirits and beers of which the operators show great pride. The sheltered courtyard provides a lovely place to sit in the summer and equally as enjoyable is a drink by the roaring fire in the winter. There is outside seating in the stable courtyard itself. Indoors there are plenty of tables in the main bar area adjacent to a log fire that roars on colder days. Also available is the Saddle Room which can accommodate larger, and on occasion, private parties.”

Customer Review Summary

The Saddle Room is the most frequent draw, hosting funeral teas and 80th birthday gatherings of roughly 25 to 50 guests. Reviewers describe helpful, respectful staff, food served quickly and hot, and a buffet with plenty to go around. The sandwiches are nice and the sausage rolls are called exceptionally tasty. Close behind, diners in the bar and courtyard praise the burgers, Sunday roast, really good haggis, ice cream and coffees, and an Edinburgh Black pint described as very smooth. A few mention the dog friendly bar, and one wants more starters. The sharpest complaint comes from one anniversary diner who found the chorizo and prawn pasta had a very tart vinegar taste and the garlic bread drowned in fatty oil, with the mac and cheese tasting better. That diner felt the prices were too high to return. One funeral tea host recalls being allowed in the night before to decorate the room and never feeling rushed to leave.

“We held a funeral tea for our six year old granddaughter in the Saddle Room. From our initial enquiry, the staff were very helpful and accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble and they allowed us access the night before to decorate the room. They catered for 50 guests and the Buffett was excellent with plenty of food to go around. We had the room booked for a number of hours but we never felt rushed to leave. I would highly recommend this venue.”

“I recently celebrated my 80th birthday with family and friends in the Saddle Room. My daughter had been in touch to organise the booking date, menu which consisted of sandwiches and sausage rolls and cups of tea .Service was very good. Luckily the weather was beautiful, which allowed us to use the outside seating area. Maximum number of guests is 40 . Thanks to Lynn and Staff who looked after us so well. Joyce Henderson Xxx”
