About The Auld Hoose

The Auld Hoose is a traditional pub in Edinburgh at 23-25 St. Leonard's St, with a high ceiling and a jukebox that plays metal and punk. The food menu features nachos in small and large sizes, and the small portion is meant to be shared between two and four people. The toppings vary, and vegetarian and vegan versions are available. Onion rings sit alongside them on the menu. At the bar, a large selection of beers is on tap, with canned craft beers, ciders, whisky and other spirits also available. Seating is walk-in, with no reservations taken.

Customer Review Summary

The nachos are what reviewers come for, described as "legendary" and so large that portions meant for two or three often go unfinished, with vegetarian and vegan versions singled out as good for sharing. Several say the toppings outweigh the chips, and one wished they had ordered the large after finishing a small. Close behind is the beer, with a wide choice of ales, ciders and craft beers on tap, plus a whisky selection. Onion rings also get praise, and staff are repeatedly called friendly. The main caveat is price, as a few call the food slightly pricey, though they say the volume justifies it. One reviewer reports being treated rudely by a waiter over a takeaway box for leftover nachos, being handed a second container without a word, and believes it was racially motivated. Others mention a quiet Sunday evening and low-key music that allowed conversation, and dog-friendly seating.

“Great pub. Came for their famous nachos (of course) which were delicious. Slightly pricy but you get what you pay for in volume! Quiet on a Sunday evening. Great follow on from a walk up Arthur’s Seat.”

“Great place with many different beers, ciders and drink options. Prices for ciders are fair. Food prices are a bit high compared to what you really get. The small plate of nachos is huge, and can be shared between 2-3 people. It tastes good. It's medium strong, and this is the only option, as everything is pre made. It's definitely recommended to visit.”

“Great pub with large selection of beer and spirits. Extremely friendly staff and the Nachos are hilariously large with more toppings than chips but well worth the try. Go ahead, split that G”

“Traditional pub where there is a sufficient number and quality of beers to choose from. We tried their legendary nachos, which were a real taste experience and the portion was for two people and was beyond our capabilities. Unfortunately, we were not able to eat such a large and tasty portion. The guy behind the bar was nice and friendly. We highly recommend this place!!”

“The nachos was not so good. Moreover, the staff's attitude was incredibly rude and disrespectful towards us (perhaps racially motivated as we are Asian, considering how friendly they were with the white group next to us, even sharing drinks). Specifically, we couldn't finish the nachos and asked for a takeaway box. The waiter rudely told us to pack it ourselves (I was fine with this as it might be their policy), but what was unacceptable was when I realized the plastic container wasn't enough and asked for another, the waiter said without even looking at me that I should have asked him first. Then, he brought another container and slammed it on the table without looking back or saying anything, not even when I was about to ask for an extra bag to carry it (he didn't seem to care how I was going to carry it). He simply ignored me and went back to chatting and drinking with the white group. I felt clearly insulted and discriminated against.I know not many people might care about this review, but with such treatment, I will never come back or recommend this place to anyone.”
