Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the gluten-free fish and chips, praised for its dedicated fryers and full gluten-free menu, with one coeliac reviewer calling it a standout. Close behind are the haggis loaded fries, scotch eggs, and the Highlander burger, all repeatedly named as highlights. The beer selection earns frequent mention, with craft options and real ales drawing interest, and one reviewer notes the orange wine and scampi fries as a winning pair. Service is consistently described as friendly and accommodating, including for dietary needs and pets, though a few note quiet periods that muted the atmosphere. One reviewer reports dry chicken in the tacos, and another flags the pint price as steep. A diner describes a busy Hogmanay shift with long wait times but still enjoyed the food and staff interactions.

“Lovely to be back in my old local. It brought back great memories and the member of staff was happy to chat. Food was lovely - online menu needs updated as there is no fish & Chips on offer, so some disappointment there as we had checked out the menu prior to booking. With neurodivergent children, it’s important for me to know there is something they will enjoy. That said, the brunch menu was also available, so thankfully breakfast items were also available. Food was fresh and delicious and we would definitely go back. Scored lower on atmosphere, but that’s no fault really to the bar, it was just there was only one other party eating at that time so very quiet.”

“Very friendly and helpful staff, very happy to accommodate us and our dog. A great selection of beers on tap and the haggis loaded fries were also a day-changer for us - so good!”

“Super happy to have given The Southern a go last night. We have lived round the corner for two years but never tried as the reviews/website don’t mention anything about Glute Free and I am coeliac. Well I am kicking myself now for not going sooner. Full gluten free menu and their fryers are all gluten free only. I had a fantastic gluten free Fish & Chips!! There were also numerous burgers on offer with GF buns, even buttermilk chicken burgers as well with GF crumb. Run don’t walk if you’re gluten free in Edinburgh 😊 Lovely service, and great soundtrack too!”

How this listing is sourced
- Where the data comes from
- Name, address, hours, contact details, amenities, ratings and review counts come from the business's publicly available profile data — not from the owner and not from paid submissions.
- How it stays current
- Every listing is re-checked on a recurring crawl, and anything reported as wrong is corrected at the source rather than patched on the page.
- How it is ranked
- Placement is never sold. Every business on the page is ordered and compared using the same public signals, so an owner cannot pay to move up.
