About The Caley Sample Room
On Angle Park Terrace in Edinburgh, The Caley Sample Room is a gastropub serving Scottish pub food alongside real ales, a range of beer and cider, wine, cocktails and whisky. The kitchen makes pies, including a chef special pie, as well as sausage and mash and burgers, all in large portions. The menu marks gluten free, vegan and dairy free options. A pub quiz runs here, and the booths by the window can be reserved for it. On match days a football crowd fills the pub, with Hearts fans among them. Live music rounds out the line-up.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often point to the beer-first pub itself, with a spread of ales, ciders, wines and whiskies, and a comfortable booth by the window. Close behind is the food, where the sausage and mash is called some of the best mash one diner has had, the sweet potato fries get praise, and a dairy free pie with bacon mash won over one customer after the barman checked with the chef. Others mention 2 for 1 burgers, seafood tagliatelle and steak pie, and one notes the portions are big. Staff are described as friendly, including a bartender who worked hard while short staffed. The main caveat is noise and crowding. The Monday quiz gets loud when questions are asked, and football nights fill the place, so one reviewer says to book then. One Hearts fan was angry that a quiz was scheduled on the night of a major match and then fans were blamed for making noise afterwards. Another finds the food a bit pricy for its quality. One reviewer notes the pub is dog friendly.

“Always love the Caley Sample Rooms as a pub. The aesthetics are nice. They were very short staffed on this visit and I felt for the bar man who worked really hard to serve us as quickly as possible.”

“Poor from The Caley Sample Room. This is a venue that was shut for a long period during and after COVID, yet seems to have a short memory when it comes to the people who helped bring it back — particularly Heart of Midlothian fans who’ve spent heavily here since reopening. Choosing to run a quiz night on the night of one of the biggest Hearts games in years is baffling in itself — but then complaining about fans coming in after the match and making noise over the quiz just takes it to another level. What exactly was expected? That a Hearts pub stays quiet after a huge game? The quiz should never have been on, or at the very least wrapped up before fans arrived back. Instead, you’ve created a clash and then blamed the very customers who keep the place busy. Brainless from management.”

“Just popped in for basic eats and was pleasantly impressed with selection and deals. 2 for 1 on burgers, which we had. Decent food and selection of beers and ciders, etc. was quiz night and clearly popular as most tables booked in advance. Can recommend and would go back.”
