About Maggie Dicksons

At 92 Grassmarket in Edinburgh, Maggie Dicksons is a pub named after Maggie Dickson, and her history is set out for visitors to read on site. The kitchen works with Scottish producers, and the menu includes fish and chips, a haggis and pork sausage roll and sticky toffee pudding. Behind the bar, the range covers Scotch whisky and gin, and the staff help guests choose a whisky. Live music plays in the evenings, and the pub points to its Instagram for details. It is open daily.

Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips is what reviewers raise most, called excellent, really good and rated 10/10 by diners who say it beats places focused on fish and chips. Close behind are the sticky toffee pudding, the steak, the chicken and haggis, and the mussels, with one reviewer also praising a fish burger and another a Rozél Rosé. The haggis and pork sausage roll and hamhock terrine also get a mention. Several describe a lively, welcoming room with live music, including a mix of Paul Simon and the Beatles, and friendly staff, with one waitress helping a table choose a whiskey. The recurring caveats are modest: one lunch reviewer found the food slow to arrive, and another felt the music was turned up a bit too loud at one point. Reviewers also recall staff accommodating them, with one group getting the next free table after a wait even though it seated six, and another squeezing in a last minute food order minutes before the kitchen closed.

“The best Scottish food experience! Went with my family and it was incredible! A classic Scottish environment! The place is super cool, the food was delicious and the staff was really friendly. They have many options to have a great meal! The steak was 10/10, so was the fish and chips, and the sticky toffee pudding was perfect! If you’re up for a drink, the Rozél Rosé is a great choice! Recommend 100%!! Will go back for sure!”

“We dropped in for dinner on a whim and were delighted, the chicken and haggis was the best meal we had in Edinburgh and we sat reading about the history of Maggie Dickson while we ate. Couldn’t recommend highly enough. Food was amazing! And I tried a new rum based drink which was wonderful too.”

“Went for lunch so the experience doesn’t include the live music or sampling of their whisky. The menus hint at a greater evening experience. Food was delicious albeit a bit slow in the arrival. It’s named after a famous Scottish woman - whom I let discover on your own.”

“Visited Maggie Dickson’s Pub and had a great experience. The pub has an interesting history behind both its name and the building, which adds a unique touch to the visit. I ordered the fish and chips, and they were excellent. The food was fresh, flavorful, and arrived quickly. Drinks were also served promptly, which was appreciated given how busy the pub can get. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and despite the crowds, everything felt clean, organized, and well managed. Overall, it’s a great place to enjoy a meal, grab a drink, and soak in a bit of Edinburgh’s history.”

“We loved absolutely everything about Maggie Dicksons! My husband and I were travelling from Canada and after walking 25,000 steps in the one afternoon were exhausted and trying to find a restaurant with a table available for us for a late dinner (8:00 pm) - on quite a cold May evening. It was a Thursday night and the area was very busy with locals and tourists so we decided we would wait for the next one that opened up - and the staff were amazing after 30 minutes they gave us the next table that opened up even though it seated six! The food was absolutely amazing and the live music was fantastic! The wait staff were all working so hard - a lovely group of young ladies and a young man :) We had the hamhock terrine, haggis and pork sausage roll, fish 'n chips and sticky toffee pudding and it was all so wonderful!! The tiny service charge added to the bill was nothing compared to what we regularly tip in Canada, so we were happy to pay it plus more for the great food and service! And the live music was flawless - he played a great mix of Paul Simon the Beatles and others that I cannot recall now!! We traveled from Scotland all the way down to Basingstoke for our trip, and Edinburgh was by far my favourite place! When we return we will look forward to eating here again!!”
