About Ghillie Dhu

Ghillie Dhu is a bar and restaurant in Edinburgh at 2 Rutland Place, set in a converted church whose vaulted Georgian hall hosts live bagpipes and ceilidhs in the evenings. The bar and restaurant sit downstairs, with booths in the bar and in an elevated dining area, plus bar seats and a counter. The menu runs from the Ghillie Dhu Board and a haggis burger to fish and chips. A two-course and three-course menu is offered alongside the regular one. The whisky selection is large, and the bartenders help guests choose from it. Sports and football play on the bar TVs, and the private booths each have their own TV. The live music lineup also includes a modern Scottish band.

Customer Review Summary

Live Scottish music is what diners mention most, from bagpipes and a Highland fling to a ceilidh and a modern band that had the room up dancing. One reviewer found it louder once it began but didn't mind, while another liked that it stayed light enough to talk over. Close behind is the food, with haggis, the Ghillie Dhu Board, a black pudding Scotch egg, triple-fried chips and fish and chips singled out. Others praise the pies, steak frites, mussels, Cranachan and a tomato soup one vegetarian called fantastic. Bartenders who helped with whisky choices and a whisky tasting also earn mentions, and staff are repeatedly called friendly and accommodating. The main complaint is from one reviewer who says a manager added a food board to the bill without asking, then seemed dismissive when questioned, and who warns tourists about it. Another reviewer felt the waitress struggled with a party of eleven and wanted fuller dish descriptions. One reviewer advises reserving tickets ahead for live shows. One couple watching football was moved to a private booth with its own TV.

“First of all, Ben is incredible, both as manager and server. His calm demeanor matches the atmosphere of the venue and the staff. But the food stole the show. From the Wee Bites appetizers to the incredible Steak Frites, then the Guiness Cake for dessert...all incredible! Do not walk past this venue. It is worth it! The bonus features were the live musicians, the sangria, and the whiskey tasting! Ben sat down and showed us where each whiskey is from and showed his passion for his job. I appreciate that extra effort and care. You made our honeymoon date night extra special! Thank you!”

“We had a great night here. The food was delicious, and we made sure to try the local delicacy, haggis, which was well worth it. The drinks were great, the service was friendly and attentive, and the entertainment made the evening even more memorable. The night started with traditional Scottish bagpipes and a Highland fling performance, followed by a modern Scottish band that had diners up dancing and joining in the fun. If you're looking for an authentic Scottish experience with good food, lively entertainment, and a fantastic atmosphere, this is definitely worth treating yourself!”

“We were warmly welcomed and shown to our table by a lovely member of staff from Dehradun (I’m sorry I didn’t catch your name). My mother and I came for an authentic taste of Scottish cuisine and the atmosphere, and neither disappointed. We started with the Ghillie Dhu Board, which arrived promptly and was a fantastic way to sample traditional favourites like haggis, black pudding, and a Scotch egg. On the side, we ordered the triple-fried chips, and they were absolutely outstanding—crispy, flavourful, and easily one of the highlights of the meal. The portion was generous. To round off the evening, we shared the Cranachan, which was the perfect finish and just as delicious. The live music created a lovely ambience without being overpowering, allowing us to enjoy our conversation while soaking in the atmosphere. As the evening went on, the bagpiper and the lass leading the ceilidh were getting ready to perform. Unfortunately, that was our cue to leave, but it gave us another reason to return. I would happily recommend this place to anyone looking for great Scottish food, a welcoming atmosphere, and excellent service. We will definitely be back!”

“Booked for a meal downstairs in the bar for 11 people. The setting is nice enough and had a nice vibe. We were offered two booths due to our party size but chose to squish together in one. Not sure if our waitress was new as she seemed to find it a little challenging handling a larger group but there was another guy who I think might have been supervisor/manager who was great. The menu is good although could do with some more detailed explanations of what dishes are. Staff were able to accommodate changes/additions we made to our choices. Reasonable priced drinks. The food was delicious. Everyone enjoyed their choices which included the curry, haggis burger, Highland blue salad, fish and chips and flat iron steak. They offer special two course menu for a fixed price as well as their regular menu. There was no delays with the food which given we were a party of eleven was good. Didn't feel pressured to leave and live music began at 8pm which is obviously louder but we didn't mind that. A great place for food and drinks.”

“While the food and atmosphere here is beyond immaculate, I did not much care for the service. As a tourist, I would tread lightly. When me and my family arrived we were greeted with open arms and menus. We selected the option for a 3 course meal and some sides that we could all share together. Although, the manager here decided to add a 30 pound food board to our ticket without asking or explaining. When the food arrived we had assumed it was one of the 3 dishes we had ordered so we enjoyed it. At the end of our meal our ticket was served and we were quite disappointed to see that the first "course" was not at all something we had asked for. When approaching the manager about it he acted clueless and very dismissive making me question his ethics in the situation. So again, as a tourist beware of these simple scams and games. Further the food was fantastic! For what we did order, we very much enjoyed beyond compare. Another thing to keep in mind is that this place often hosts live shows, so be sure to look ahead of time to reserve tickets if you are wanting to experience that.”
