About The Alexander Graham Bell

The Alexander Graham Bell is a Wetherspoon pub at 128 George St in Edinburgh. A long bar in dark wood anchors the room, and antique phones and pictures are on display around it, giving customers something to look at while they wait. Orders go through the bar, where customers give a table number so food can be brought out. Drinks are ordered there too and carried back to the table. The menu runs to 78 dishes and starts early with Small Breakfasts. Later in the day it moves to the Sticky Korean Fried Chicken Bowl and a Haggis Panini. An afternoon special pairs scampi with local cider.

Customer Review Summary

Most reviewers come for cheap, filling pub food, and the Spice Bag with chicken and curry is named most often, called a perfect shareable. Close behind are fish and chips with a pint included, the scampi with a local cider, and a haggis panini. Several mention friendly service, a clean bar, spacious tables and antique phones on the walls, though one finds it loud and busy. One Indian reviewer rated the Indian dishes below average but accepted them as cheap. Complaints are specific. One diner whose dog lay calmly by an outdoor table was told dogs were not allowed after ordering, and the refund was slow. A family reports a manager asked their 17 year old for ID and refused him a cola because they were not ordering food.

“Sat outside with my dog. No signs anywhere to say no dogs -given the fact it is on the literal public street. Order our food and drinks. Waitress brings out the drinks, promptly tells us no dogs allowed, got a refund. She wasn't rude, but also not friendly in the slightest. She actually just looked disgusted that I dare take my dog on the street (he was lying calmly on the ground). Now I totally understand not everywhere is dog friendly. But to not even have a sign up and then have the audacity to ask us to leave and that refund will take 5 days is wild.”

“Located in one of the high street locations of the city, this pub offers a great ambience and service. The food and drinks are good too. The best thing I liked is the way the tables are arranged which looked quite spacious. I have been to other Wetherspoon where the layout is a bit cramped.”

“Very nice food for a Spoons, Spice Bag and Haggis Panini were amazing. Very clean bar and friendly service.”

“This was a neat stop over for lunch with my family. All around you there are fun antique phones and pictures. The food at this joint is delicious and cooked to order. You simply order at the bar, give them your table number and they bring it to your table. You order you drinks at the bar and taken them to your table. The environment was calm, clean and not loud, you could still have a conversation and be heard. They also had a nice outside seating area where you can enjoy beautiful weather and your drink of choice.”

“If you're in Edinburgh and want a cheap meal, just go to Spoons. The fish & chips is surprisingly good, and getting a pint included for that price is a lifesaver in this city. It’s loud and busy, but for a cheap lunch and a beer, it’s perfect.”
