Quick info
About The Oriental Palace
Recipes handed down through the generations shape the cooking at The Oriental Palace, a long-running Chinese restaurant on Sprotbrough Rd in Doncaster. The menu runs long, giving tables a wide choice across an evening sit-down service with table service that suits birthdays and other occasions. The owner comes out to the tables to chat and joke with diners as the meal goes on. Booking ahead is advised, though the kitchen also takes phone orders for collection, with food picked up before closing for anyone eating at home. A step-free, wheelchair-accessible entrance keeps the dining room reachable for visitors with mobility needs, and high chairs are on hand for families with young children. The restaurant opens daily.

Customer Review Summary
Returning diners center their praise on the food itself, with several calling it the best Chinese cooking they have tasted and singling out fresh-tasting produce, generous portions and a huge range of dishes. Close behind is the front of house, described as friendly, humorous and fast even when busy, with one group finding the owner genuinely funny and a birthday party crediting the host with making the evening. A first-timer admired the decor, while a mixed review disliked the untraditional room, found the crackers lacking crunch and the curry unlike other Chinese restaurants, though the soup was called brilliant. The sharpest criticism, from two reviewers, is salt: one describes soft-shell crab and the meat boats as overwhelmingly salty, another says roast duck in black bean sauce with egg fried rice was inedible. One of those diners also reports sticky floors and a low hygiene sticker. That salt complaint, handled over the phone in what the reviewer calls a rude and dismissive manner, ended in a refund and the customer being told they were banned from ordering again.

“First time at the Oriental Palace, wanted to find a good Chinese restaurant local to me. What a great surprise, the decor is beautiful, the service is impeccable and food was nothing short of superb. Everything was cooked with flair and presentation was great. The choice of dishes is huge with a unbelievable range suitable for all tastes. Prices are very reasonable and all in all it was a very enjoyable dining experience, we will be back very soon. Keap uobtge great work and once again thank you for the whole night, it was amazing. Have been back several times food is always amazing and the staff are super, a must if you are in the Doncaster area, we drive a hour to get there and it's worth every mile.”

“If I could rate this place lower than a 1, I’d need a shovel because that’s where the rating would go — straight underground. Let’s start with the food. My soft-shell crab (usually my favorite dish) tasted like Poseidon himself had seasoned it with pure ocean tears and regret. So salty I’m surprised it didn’t come with a complimentary IV drip. The “meat boats” (or as I call them, S.S. Cat Food) were a flavor adventure I didn’t sign up for. Now, onto the service. The woman serving us had the warmth of a tax audit. Every time I looked up, she was giving me the kind of stare that made me wonder if I owed her money. When I politely left my crab untouched, she hovered like a detective at a crime scene: “Why you no like? What’s wrong? Why you no eat?” Ma’am, because my taste buds have rights. And then — just when I thought it couldn’t get worse — I spotted it. The hygiene sticker. A glorious, shining 2. I don’t know what happened to 3, 4, or 5, but clearly they didn’t survive dinner here either. Finally, the floors. Sticky, grimy, and possibly sentient. I’ve seen cleaner surfaces in a student flat after Freshers’ Week. In short, if you enjoy salty mystery meat, unsettling stares, and playing “guess what that is on the floor,” then congratulations — you’ve found paradise. For everyone else, maybe just… don’t.”
