About Taste Peru

Taste Peru is a Peruvian food stall inside Doncaster's Wool Market, where orders go in at the counter and a buzzer signals when a dish is ready. The menu includes beef quesadillas and birria beef tacos, with beef served alongside rice, vegetables, and fries. A crunchwrap comes with fries and chipotle sauce, and empanadas appear on the menu, though they are not always available. Inka Cola and other Inka drinks, including lime, strawberry, guava, and melon flavours, round out the offering. There is no table service, and the stall takes walk-ins only, with no booking system. Food generally takes around 25 to 30 minutes to prepare, so some waiting is part of ordering here. The stall keeps a fixed run of days, opening Thursday to Sunday and staying closed Monday through Wednesday.

Customer Review Summary

Beef dishes draw the most praise at this Wool Market stall, with reviewers describing the birria beef tacos as full of flavour and generously portioned, and others singling out a beef quesadilla meal with succulent beef and chips, and a tender, gently spiced beef plate with rice and vegetables. Close behind, the Inka Cola in several flavours is called refreshing and not too sweet, and one reviewer calls it the highlight of the visit. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly, and several note fast service, though one reports a wait of around half an hour. The criticism is substantial. Several reviewers say the food does not taste authentically Peruvian, with one comparing small empanadas to a Cornish pasty. Others report dry chicken, tough beef with mostly rice and fries, and very small portions for the price. One reviewer says the rice seemed pre-made and smelled of plastic, and raises concerns about health. A Crunchwrap with pulled beef was found lacking in flavour until dipped in the chipotle sauce.

“I had the beef quesadilla meal and my girlfriend had the biria tacos meal and I can hands down say this was the best bit of scran I’ve had in a very long time. Succulent beef flavoured to perfection, with the most scrumptious chips on the side, what a day to be alive, fella working there was as sound as can be perfect service 🙏”

“Just tucked into the birria beef tacos. It’s a Thursday afternoon. Ordered with ease. Got my buzzer ( I know the drill in the woolmarket) 10 mins later I’ve got my food. It was full of flavour! The beef in the tacos was Devine! And a very generous portion. The guy serving was fab too! I can be a sucker for routine, clapping Seoul, Greeks god cuisine (both equally fabulous) but each time I’ve had taste of Peru it’s been the bomb!”

“Came on a mate’s recommendation—was fully prepared to judge him forever… but it was actually brilliant! Fast, flavourful food, great staff. I’ll definitely eat here again.”

“Portions were ridiculously small, food isn’t authentic at all nothing like Peruvian or Latin food at all. Very expensive for the food you’re getting. Definitely not worth trying. You’ll be disappointed.”

“We visited Taste Peru hoping to try some authentic Peruvian street food, but unfortunately we left a bit disappointed. The dishes we tried didn’t really taste like Peruvian food and felt more like generic street food rather than the distinctive flavours you’d normally expect. We tried the empanadas and found them quite small, and the flavour was closer to a Cornish pasty than a traditional empanada. They lacked the seasoning and character that usually make Peruvian empanadas stand out. The only thing that tasted truly authentic was the Inka Cola, which ended up being the highlight of the visit. We hope the restaurant can focus more on bringing out genuine Peruvian flavours, as that’s likely what many people expect when visiting a place called Taste Peru.”
