About The old school bistro & tearooms

On High St in Doncaster, The Old School Bistro & Tearooms pairs a bistro menu with a tearoom menu and a full bar. Breakfast includes a bacon and egg sarnie on tiger bread, and the afternoon tea comes with sandwiches and cake. Homemade cakes, including Victoria sponge, are part of the tearoom side. The bar serves beers, spirits and cocktails, and a weekly acoustic night comes with 2-for-1 cocktails, which gives the evening a live-music focus. A weekly quiz night runs as a separate event, and booking is needed for it. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the Sunday lunch and the generous, home made portions, with a crispy chicken wrap, a brie and bacon panini, and a bacon and egg sarnie on tiger bread all singled out. The coffee, a cherry and almond scone, a breakfast muffin, and a huge Victoria sponge also earn praise. Several describe a welcoming front of house, and one recalls a free birthday cake with a candle and a manager making a free sandwich for a friend who was unwell. Another mentions 2 for 1 cocktails and an acoustic night, plus a courtyard and garden for sitting outside. The main complaint comes from one afternoon tea visit: tea took 45 minutes to arrive, cups came with tea ring stains, the tea was tepid, the bread was going stale, the coffee machine was down so no espresso martini, and the bill took a further 20 minutes. Another reviewer notes a long wait for food with a group of 6, and a level crossing that delayed their arrival. One reviewer adds that the Friday quiz needs booking.

“Our 1st time at the tearooms on this beautiful, sunny, September lunchtime. We were visiting the area and wanted a spot of lunch at a family run tearooms. We had the crispy chicken wrap and the brie and bacon panini. Gosh they were both delicious, side salad was lovely a fresh. Portion sizes were so big. We were made to feel so very welcome. The homemade cakes looked delicious. We sat outside in the garden in the sunshine. Will mostly definitely visit again when back in the area. Thank you for a lovely lunch and welcoming atmosphere”

“HUGE portions of quality tasty food and clearly very popular with the more elderly for their golden oldies menu. Really varied and good menu. There was quite a long wait for food but we were a group of 6 and there was another group of 8 that ordered just before us so fairly standard for a smaller place. The only issue with access is it's just beyond the train line which genuinely took about 20 minutes to get through as when the barriers come down they're down for nearly 10 minutes but nothing the tearoom can do about that! Just maybe avoid if you're in a hurry.”
