About The Draughtsman Alehouse

The Draughtsman Alehouse is a pub in Doncaster, set on Platform 3b of Doncaster Railway Station in the former Victorian buffet room, which stood empty for 18 years before its restoration. It runs as a micropub with a rotating selection of keg and cask beers, plus cans and bottles. Rhubarb gin and prosecco sit alongside the beers for those who want something else. No food is served, but snacks including pork pies are on the bar. The team will suggest a beer if you tell them what you like. A family runs the business, and its range includes beer brewed locally.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the beer selection at this platform bar, praising the mix of cask, keg, can and bottled options, including rare European and US offerings and a Full Circle brewery beer. Several note staff who know their stuff and will suggest a beer if preferences are given, and one says the barman helped them through a delayed train with tips on boarding. Close behind is the restored former station buffet room, described as really nicely done out, with seats inside and a few tables outside under cover where diners watch the trains pass. Bar snacks such as pork pies and homemade snacks get a mention, alongside options like rhubarb gin and prosecco for those who want something other than beer. The recurring caveats are small. One reviewer thinks it would get cramped when busier, and another hopes the screens on the bar come down, since customers have to step to the side of them to get a beer or talk to the bartender. One reviewer also mentions taking draught beer away for the onward journey.

“Our train was delayed, so we'd missed our connection. Doncaster Station then became chaos as trains came to a standstill. So we took refuge in the Draughtsman. So glad we did. They had crazy beers and ales to suit all our tastes and the barman was super friendly and made our delays more bareable. He also offered us some very useful tips for ensuring we boarded out train when needed, as the platform was very busy! We will be sure to pop back if ever we're in Doncaster again.”

“Well if you take time to experience a pint you won’t be disappointed and the food is all exceptional. Enough said great little station bar Harrison is a true gentleman and a great conversationalist . Great guy .”

“Great little gem on Doncaster station. I popped in after a visit to Doncaster and a delayed train. Great atmosphere, knowledgeable staff and fantastic beer. (The full circle brewery -i love the cut of your jib. Awesome taste). A jewel. Thanks Harrison and hope u enjoyed the Okells Manx beer.”

“We pop in here whenever we're in the station. It is situated on platform 3b, has some seats inside and some under cover outside. This place has undoubtedly the best beer in Doncaster and there is always something to try. They do manage to pack a good variety of drinks in though so if you prefer a more mainstream beer, a rhubarb gin or a prosecco thne you will also be catered for. They don't serve food but they have a little snack selection on the side of the bar. Staff are friendly and know their stuff!”
  • Kelly Boyle
“Absolutely stunning little bar located on platform 3B. Selling a great selection of craft ales and bottled ciders. We had the great pleasure of being served by Harrison, who is extremely knowledgeable about what he is selling and obviously has a passion for his job. We look forward to returning.”
