About The Boat Inn

The Boat Inn is a 17th-century pub in Doncaster, on Lower Sprotbrough, standing beside a river and canal. A picnic area sits in the middle of the water and is reached by a nearby bridge, and the towpath gives walkers a route along the water. The kitchen pairs traditional pub dishes with modern global ones. Fish and chips comes with chunky chips, and the Sunday dinners are served with roast potatoes, including a roast turkey and a "Three roast". The pub opens daily. Food can take a long time to arrive on busy days, such as sunny weather and bank holidays.

“Stayed overnight in our motorhome and had a beautiful meal. A great place, lovely decor, very friendly staff and the food was excellent. I had the salmon and my husband the lamb. Beautifully presented and it tasted delicious. It the second time we have stayed and ate at the Boat Inn and we will be back!”

“I absolutely loved it, went on it just before joining the M1 on a long drive and it was admittedly incredible. I just wanted some rustic place to be quiet that served fish and chips, and got probably one of my favourite pub tea/dinner experiences ever. Lorraine the server was great, absolutely loved her. The food was so so much better than expected and the ambiance was quite incredible.”

“Not even worth one star Booked this restaurant 2 months ago while planning our roadtrip to Scotland. I thought this place would be perfect to relax after 4 hours on the road with my family and my dog after looking at the location, menu and reading the reviews After turning up for our booking (albeit 20mins early) we were told (10mins later after settling in) that there would be an hour wait for food because of everyone enjoying the lovely weather. If we ordered starters, that would be an hour wait then mains will take another hour after that. Shocked, we asked if booked guests eating in the restaurant aren't prioritised and our server said it didn't matter, it's still an hour wait for each course. We had a schedule to keep and 2 hours waiting for food was not going to work. We decided to leave and ended up stopping at a service station. Huge disappointment after waiting 2 months to eat here and enjoy the location. Ridiculous policy and badly managed establishment. Such a shame. Update Following the response from the team, it reinforces my last point about the establishment being poorly managed. To Felicity and The Team, you shouldn't have to "work your hardest to get food out" to patrons that cannot be catered for in the first place. Seriously revisit your policy on outside seating if your kitchen cannot cope - drinks only, bar snacks only, limited menu, small outside seating menu, reduce the number of tables etc. Your main menu looks and sounds amazing and I bet the food is great. It's truly a disservice to your staff that you knowingly and willingly put them under such pressure that can be easily avoided”

“Stayed overnight in my Motorhome in their carpark, had lunch and Dinner which was of good quality and flavour if not a bit pricey for Pub grub…, always frequent the places I stay and have yet to find anything better than the Boat Inn, Doncaster. Planning to stay again in a couple of weeks (end of April 26) overnight on our way to the Lake District and Lowlands of Scotland, our tour will take us up the west coast and our return down the east coast of Scotland and England!. The actual building is well maintained and is in such a glorious position with both a river and canal on its door step, great walks with dog along the toe path and has a picnic area in the middle of the river/canal which is accessible via the bridge nearby - currently encountered a power failure to the Pub so the bottom more direct and closer road is closed of for road works, the front of the carpark has 2 large generators which are noisy but suggest you park up the top far enough away to not be bothered with them”

Customer Review Summary

Roast dinners draw the most praise. Reviewers describe a Sunday dinner with plenty of roast potatoes, a three roast and a roast turkey cooked to perfection, though one would have liked more gravy. Fish and chips come close behind, with chunky chips and many neighbouring tables ordering them. The salmon and the lamb are called beautifully presented and delicious. Diners also like the riverside setting for walks before or after a meal, and describe friendly servers and a cozy, clean room. Motorhome guests mention staying overnight in the car park and returning. The recurring complaint is waiting. One bank holiday visitor says the food took very long to arrive, another waited to place initial orders, and a booked party was told every course would take a long wait in the sunny weather, so they left for a service station. A different reviewer says they were told the inn was fully booked while many tables looked empty, and felt unwelcome.
