Quick info
About House Boat Restaurant
On St Peter's St in Derby, House Boat Restaurant serves a Kerala-style South Indian menu from number 89-91. Fish curry wrapped in banana leaf sits alongside Boatman's fish curry, which comes with Malabar parotta and rice. Vegetarian diners can order a platter with dosa, and the starters and sides follow the same Kerala style. At lunchtime, a thali comes with a beer or soft drink, and a mid-day buffet runs as another option. The team explains the dishes and sauces at the table and asks which spice level you want. Murals and paintings cover the walls of the dining room.

Customer Review Summary
Fish curry is the dish reviewers return to most, whether wrapped in banana leaf or served with Malabar paratha and rice. Close behind are the Chicken Kondattam and lamb chukka starters, the Nadan Kozhi curry, and a lunchtime thali with chicken curry and paratha that came with a beer or soft drink. Gulab Jamun with ice cream and masala tea round out the meals people describe. Value for money comes up repeatedly, alongside friendly servers and the murals and paintings that diners say add to the atmosphere. One reviewer was less impressed, finding the fish curry heavy on chilli powder and light on other spices, with medium portions and an okay taste. Others describe a server explaining which sauce and chutney was which, asking for a preferred spice level, and then checking back to confirm it was right.

“Beautiful decor and paintings in the restaurant that really add to the atmosphere. Super busy when we went in and that speaks for itself. The food was absolutely delicious, really rich and flavourful, fantastic value for money and the servers were all super lovely also! We really enjoyed our visit!”

“We were shopping in Derby and thought we’d try Houseboat for lunch and it didn’t disappoint! We went for the Thali lunchtime deal and thought it was excellent value for money and very tasty especially the chicken curry and paratha it even came with a beer or soft drink. The staff were very friendly and the decor is quirky all adding to a lovely relaxed atmosphere, we will definitely be going back when we are next in Derby.”

“We recently had the pleasure of photographing for the restaurant and, once the shoot had finished, we sat down to enjoy the food ourselves. Everything we photographed looked fantastic, but the best part was discovering it tasted every bit as good as it looked! The flavours were unreal, the presentation was beautiful and the welcome we received from the whole team made the experience even better. If you’re looking for authentic South Indian food in Derby City Centre, this is a place we’d happily recommend.”

“I had boatman fish curry with malabar paratta and rice. The portions are medium and taste is okay not very great. The fish curry is full of chilli powder with very less other spices. The ambience is good, but house flies 🪰 are everywhere, can be improved. Overall okay but not great.”

“From the minute my friend and I walked in, we were welcomed with warm smiles from all the team working there. The service and food were amazing. I can't wait to go back, so I'm already booked in. My friend had the fabulous fish curry wrapped in the banana leaf, whilst I had the Nadan Kozhi Curry, with the Malabhar parantha. I highly recommend both👌🏼. We finished off by having the Indian Masala tea, with a lovely dessert each. It was really good value as well.”
