Hari Hari
Quick info
About Hari Hari
Hari Hari is a family-owned takeout restaurant on Iron Gate in Derby, serving Indonesian and Pan Asian food from a small shop. The menu leads with bao buns filled with tofu satay or chicken katsu, and the sauces are made in-house. Rice and noodle boxes and wraps make up the rest, including a chicken rendang noodle box. Service is walk-in, with a queue to order and then a wait while the food is prepared. Lunchtime is busy, and some mains, the beef among them, sell out on busy days. The shop is closed on Sunday and Monday.

Customer Review Summary
Bao buns draw the most mentions, especially the tofu satay bao, described as fresh, crispy and spicy, and the chicken katsu bao. Close behind are the rendang boxes, with reviewers praising the beef rendang with noodles for its complex flavour and the chicken rendang noodle box for its spices and healthy extras. Others name a sea bass noodle box, chicken teriyaki noodles, chicken katsu noodles and a beef wrap, with portions called good and filling. Staff are described as friendly and efficient. The recurring trade-off is demand. Reviewers find it very busy, with a wait after queuing, and report that mains and the beef sell out, so several suggest arriving early on Saturdays and ordering ahead for big groups. Others note limited seating and no tea or coffee, and one wanted more sauce on the katsu bao. Reviewers also praise the homemade sauces, and one describes a spicy sauce spooned from a blender cup that was hot but very tasty.

“Chicken rendang box is always a hit from here. Love the flavours and spices put together in this little box full of healthy bits. It's small shop with limited seating, but quite a hit amongst locals for a work day lunch takeaway. So visit here for a healthy, tastey Southeast Asian food bite and a quick chat with Hari and her cool staff.”

“Visited today after wanting to try for some time, it’s always busy when I walked past so knew it would be worth the wait. Really busy, so be prepared to wait 15-20 minutes once you’ve queued to ordered, however the staff are friendly and are clearly working as hard and quickly as possible. We ordered the tofu bao buns (vegan) and they were delicious. The portion size is good value for money. Would return to try a wrap or rice box in the future.”

“Consistently Phenomenal Over The Years! Honestly the best Tofu Satay Bao Buns! Fresh, crispy, spicy and melts in the mouth. We plan our visits to Derby on the days Hari Hari is open (closed Sunday/Monday). It’s always busy with orders from the nearby shops, folk like us coming back again and again, and folk just finding this tiny gem. If you’re lucky you can eat in. Otherwise sit outside the Cathedral and watch the world go by. You’re guaranteed a warm welcome and amazing food. Photo of half portion tofu Bao. We were too busy digging in to take a photo of both Bao 😋 For big groups I’d advise ordering in advance!”

“Very fitting Hari Hari is right outside of a church - it's Heavenly!!! Staff are lovely, genuine and clearly care about both their customers and especially their food. Price is good, too. Definitely will be coming back again and again! We got the Chicken Teriaki Noodles and the Chicken Katsu Noodles. I'd recommend to try it all!”
