About Cosy Club

Cosy Club is a British restaurant in Derby, set inside the Royal Buildings, which date back to 1837. The building has very high ceilings, paintings on the walls and a run of joined open-plan rooms and bars leading to a ballroom with tall windows. The menu covers starters, mains, sides, desserts, brunch and light meals, with small plates including garlic butter prawns, beef croquettes and buttermilk fried chicken. Bartenders work in formal wear behind the bars. Groups can use The Wallace Room for private dining, and a party menu with shared starters is available for larger bookings. Allergens are tagged on both the food and the drinks.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often point to the decor and the grand old building, describing high ceilings, paintings on the walls and a ballroom, and the food gets steady praise alongside it. The Cosy Smash Burger is called juicy, while the small plates draw repeated mentions: garlic butter prawns cooked to perfection, beef croquettes, buttermilk and Korean fried chicken, and garlic flatbread. Close behind, one group host praised the party menu and shared starters for a large gathering, and a parent liked the children's menu and the activity sheets and crayons. Others note staff handling allergies, with drinks labelled for them. The caveats concern service pacing. One reviewer who booked a private room found a single staff member covering the event, a sit-down setup that turned out to be standing, and food arriving late after repeated follow-ups. Another had to chase the bill and a missing dessert drink, which was removed from the bill as an apology. One reviewer suggests booking ahead because it gets very busy.

“We recently booked a private room here for an event, and although the food was excellent, unfortunately the organisation and service surrounding the event left us disappointed. When we arrived, there didn’t seem to be any coordination. Nobody welcomed us or seemed particularly aware of what was happening with our booking on the day and there was no manager available to speak to. Instead, just ONE member of staff had been assigned to look after our entire event for the afternoon. There also seemed to be some confusion around the event booking. We had expected a sit-down dinner arrangement, but when we arrived, the room had apparently been booked as more of a casual standing event. Space was limited, so we ended up having to move tables around ourselves and ask for an additional table to make the set-up work for our guests. For a pre-booked private event, we expected everything to feel much more prepared before we arrived. Our event started at 1pm and we had agreed beforehand that the food would be served at 2pm. Unfortunately, the food arrived late and we had to follow up a couple of times with the member of staff to find out what was happening. Again, it felt as though we were having to manage and chase things ourselves rather than being looked after as hosts of a private event. It did feel like we were left alone. On a positive note, the food itself was great and our guests really enjoyed it. However, I really think there needs to be better communication and coordination between the bookings team and the Derby team. We suggest when someone books a private room for an event, there should be clear handover, someone responsible for overseeing it on the day, and a proper welcome when the hosts arrive. Instead, at times it felt like we were just passing customers rather than people who had specifically booked and organised a private event. The food was great, but the overall experience could have been so much better with more organisation and attention to the event.”

“I hosted a big group meal at cosy club in Derby last week for 52 people from 12 different countries! - they laid things out so we had about half the restaurant- with all the tables pre laid out with the party menu. Everything was perfect! Everyone loved the decor, the food was fantastic and having the party menu was brilliant- made ordering really easy and the shared starters were fantastic. Highly recommend it for groups of any size!”

“The small plates are to die for, we had the garlic butter prawns, beef croquettes and garlic flatbread. The garlic prawns were cooked to perfection!!! We also had a Caesar salad, it was lovely and flavourful and the Korean fried chicken was so nice! Definitely recommend to book beforehand, it gets super busy.”

“Unbelievable location, Headed to Derby for lunch was going to head to the norm locations. Was a by chance booking for a quiet lunch with my wife When you approach the small unassuming front of the building you would never know what adventure awaits The building is what is left of a hotel which also had a life as a nightclub, to say its a beautiful location just doesnt do it justice. As you will see from my pictures There is a long collection of joining open plan rooms/bars each light and open feeling very welcoming, eventually leading to the ball room! A grand tall room with almost floor to ceiling large windows, again beautifully decorated you can almost imagine the history and life that has been within these walls So we came here to celebrate my birthday and our anniversary and not a better location I can think of and the food was simply incredible Overall it was a brilliant day and we will come back often”

“I just had an incredible meal and everything was spot on! The Cosy Smash Burger was a highlight—super tasty and juicy. The Pulled Beef & Smoked Bacon Croquettes and Buttermilk Fried Chicken were also fab, both in taste and presentation. Service was quick, and the whole place felt clean and welcoming. Definitely will be back for more!”
