Customer Review Summary

Friendly staff draw the most praise, with several reviewers calling them outstanding and describing them as fun yet professional. Close behind is the food and coffee. Diners name the Panang curry with duck and flatbread, the sausage and egg muffins at brunch, a sausage and bacon bap, and the honeycomb cake, while the iced coffee with cold cream foam, the cappuccino and the mocha also get praise. Reviewers call the picture-covered walls quirky, and one calls the dim interior atmospheric. Another finds the decor scruffy and the food pricier and weaker than Wetherspoons. Food temperature is the recurring complaint. One salad arrived warm and wilted with dry, hard chicken, and another reviewer says dishes arrive a little cold after the trip from upstairs. One reviewer also describes a rude reply from bar staff after being passed over for another customer. The giant choux bun with banana and Biscoff struck one diner as too much. One reviewer's chicken schwarma arrived warm, and staff took it back and brought a hot replacement.

“I don’t live in Derby and find it a bit of a food desert when I have stayed locally. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that one of these Lounges had opened - have one of these close to where I live so knew what to expect from this chain, so it’s a good addition here. For those that don’t know, these Lounges are sort of like a fancier version of Wetherspoons – that’s not a bad thing. What you have is a standardised food and drink offering, with a good range from breakfast to dinner, alongside drinks, coffee etc – there’s also a very good online ordering system. I like standardised things, you know what to expect – whether you’re in Faversham, Buxton or Derby, you know the breakfast will be decent, you know the curry will be of a decent standard etc. This chain does that very well and I’ve always had good meals here. This chain is a sort of sibling of the Cosy Club – I notice there is one of those just around the corner. Unusual to find the two so close together. It is what it is though. Decided to pop into this Derby one, which is called Carnero (they are all, I think, something ending in ‘o’) – it’s a largish premises situated opposite the big Tesco (nee M&S) on St Peter’s Street. A few tables outside and then the place sprawls backwards from there, with a large bar to the left. Not very busy on a Wednesday, so choice of tables. Candles on the tables. There are no gaming machines inside, this chain doesn’t do that. You can bring dogs in as well; if you have a dog. Ordered the Panang curry with duck to eat, little flatbread on the side – I do like this, it is probably one of the nicer things they’ve had on the menu, and I will miss it when they refresh for Autumn/Winter. Curry has good hint of coconut, and you get a good portion. The duck is added on top (can also be chicken). Food arrived quickly and was nice and hot. Afterwards, I tried the giant choux bun filled with banana and topped with Biscoff – wasn’t so keen on this, not really a fan of either banana or Biscoff and it was all a bit too much together. Pints of Moretti to drink – I’d usually have the Hofmeister, but that’s a bit strong for the evening. New Moretti glasses though, nice to see. Quite a lot of people ordering at the bar in here – not seen that in the other ones I’ve visited. Perhaps people in Derby like to use cash more that elsewhere? I’d recommend ordering via the app though – no queuing and has all the options laid out. Overall a decent experience and this place is recommended if you’re out and about in Derby and looking for a decent meal with a drink and don’t fancy a traditional pub. Nice food and a pretty fulsome choice – would suit many palates.”

“Ordered a salad, it came and the salad was warm, wilted and the chicken was dry and hard where it had either been left out or under a heat lamp. One of the bar staffs attitudes was very rude. I went to the bar to tell them and waited, another customer then came along and got served immediately. One of the bar staff alerted the other member of staff that I was first and his response was ‘well I’m talking to him now’ no apology or acknowledgment. Extremely poor service and poor food. It’s a shame because I come here a lot but I won’t be returning.”

“Such a lovely place to visit. The staff were incredibly friendly from start to finish. They all seemed like they were having fun but so professional. The food was exceptionallly nice. Although my chicken schwarma came out warm they took it back and brought me a fresh one which was hot. Would definitely recommend and visit again”

“Visited Carnero over many years and it never dissapoints. In all those years the staff have been outstanding. The food is great too. It's handy for a pre show meal at Vailant live and as good for a coffee as it is for a drink and food. Relaxed atmosphere which is great for solo females, families or groups.”
