About Golden Cross
Golden Cross is a pub in Coventry at 8 Hay Ln, set in a historic building next to Coventry Cathedral. The history of the pub is printed on the back of the menus on the tables, and old photos are displayed around the building. The kitchen cooks British pub food, with bangers and mash on the menu. The large menu also covers gluten free and coeliac diets, and includes a big vegan section. At the bar, the drinks list runs to real ales, lagers, ciders, gins and vodkas. Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often point to the Golden Cross's history, with its old building beside Coventry Cathedral, old photos on the walls and the pub's story printed on the menus. Food comes close behind, and several praise how well the kitchen handles dietary needs, including a coeliac diner who could eat anything on the menu and a broad vegan menu. Named dishes include bangers and mash with creamy mash and rich gravy, and a crunchy cod tail with crispy breading and a soft inside. Cider, real ales and a wide beer selection also earn mentions, along with friendly, prompt staff and a relaxing beer garden. The caveats are small. One reviewer noticed a smell of urine near the toilets, another arrived at 2.45pm and just made the kitchen's last orders, and one found the food only ok. Several reviewers describe visiting before or after the Cathedral and the transport museum.

“During my visit to the UK, I had the pleasure of dining at the Golden Cross in Coventry, and I’m so glad I found this gem. I ordered the traditional bangers and mash, and it was absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked sausages, creamy mash, and rich gravy that tied everything together beautifully. It was exactly the comforting British meal I was hoping for. The cider was excellent as well, refreshing and full of flavour, a perfect pairing with the meal. What truly made the experience special, was the historic atmosphere of the building. The character, charm, and sense of history created the perfect setting for a memorable dinner. If you’re looking for great food in an authentic, historic environment, I highly recommend it!”

“Lovely food, and staff and menu are amazing with allergies, I could eat anything on the menu safely (I’m coeliac) and not feel like the I’m odd one out or an inconvenience. Have been here a few times now and will keep coming, very happy!”
