About The Purple Dog

The Purple Dog is a town centre pub on Eld Ln in Colchester, and its history dates to 1647, when it began as a hole bashed through the town's Roman wall to give people a passage to St John's Abbey. The kitchen serves burgers, including a stuffed cheese burger, alongside a Sunday roast. At the bar, cask ales sit next to draught beers and lagers, with Ghost Ship among them, and cocktails join a wide selection of beers. Dogs are welcome. The building has carried several names over the centuries, and it was rebranded as The Purple Dog in September 2006.

Customer Review Summary

Burgers lead the praise, with diners singling out the stuffed cheese burger, cooked very slightly pink with a chilli jam relish, and another describing burgers with fresh dressing and veg. Close behind are the Sunday roast, fish and chips and the coleslaw, and one reviewer calls the food a step above regular pub grub. Several mention friendly staff, and drinkers point to a wide selection of cask ales, draught beers and cocktails, including Ghost Ship, which one reviewer notes few Colchester town centre pubs serve. The atmosphere is described as friendly, relaxed and cozy. The complaints are practical. The pub and beer garden get very busy at weekends, one group of seven found the inside cold and wondered whether the heating was broken, and another reviewer says outdoor seating is surrounded by smokers wherever they sit. One regular recalls that when a labrador knocked over its water bowl, clearing it up was not an issue.

“Great foid and staff. The only downside is that if you prefer to sit outside you are surrounded by smokers no matter where you sit”

“Town centre pub with a nice selection of cask ales 🍺 as well as draft beers and largers. The food is good and the price point is good. The pub and beer garden can get very busy at the weekends.”

“Once had an entire glass of red wine spilled down my tuxedo here. Luckily I was wearing my red tuxedo so I still haven’t washed it despite it being 6 months. Even sleep in it sometimes. Other than that brilliant place. Wouldn’t accept vintage Royal Mail stamps from 1971 as payment but beggars can’t be choosers. Also they do free beer in the urinals but they don’t advertise it enough. Tastes funny but free is always good!”
  • Lauren Kay
“Really good place to eat. I've been here a few times and every time had no complaints. Really good food and lovely service. The coleslaw is the best. Would highly recommend. Plenty of tables to sit at. Nice and quiet when I went. Great place for food and drink and reasonably priced as well.”

Highlights

“The Purple Dog is one of the oldest pubs (ale houses) in Colchester, dating back to 1647. Sited opposite Scheregate Steps, it started life in the medieval period as a 'hole' bashed through the town's famous Roman wall, providing a passage for people travelling to and from St John's Abbey, one of Colchester's oldest buildings. In 1764 it was called the Joiner's Arms. In 1882, the pub was renamed the Clarence, after the Duke of Clarence who later became King William IV. It was rebranded The Purple Dog in September 2006 and has since gone to create its own history. Now it offers a great range of award winning ales, beers, wines, teas, coffees & delicious homemade food, as well as a wonderful nighlife and friendly welcoming atmosphere.”
