About The Castle Inn

The Castle Inn is a dog-friendly pub at 92 High St in Colchester, next to Colchester castle. Dogs have a menu of their own, which includes a chicken dish, so owners can order for their pets as well as themselves. The kitchen serves pork belly and fish and chips, with a beef Sunday roast for those after a full lunch. Breakfast is on the menu too, and daily specials add to the main choices. The bar keeps a beer selection and offers samples, so drinkers can try a beer before they buy a pint.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the food and the welcome, with the Sunday roast and pub classics leading the praise: a beef Sunday roast, pork belly, and fish and chips described as better than most dedicated chip shops. Close behind is the beer selection, where bar staff offer samples and one reviewer mentions Japanese whiskies. The dog menu, with chicken for dogs, and the outside area also come up as draws, and a sticky toffee pudding special gets a mention too. Staff are called friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable by most.

“Discovered this little gem today. I'd been to court and I was waiting for my daughter. Beer isn't the cheapest but the selection is very good and the beer lines are obviously cleaned very often. A very nice pint indeed. Plenty of seating inside and outside. Toilets incredibly clean. Staff incredibly friendly and helpful. It's also worth mentioning that they are also incredibly approachable and more than happy to help and offer you a sample if you want to try something. They do really nice pork scratchings too. All in all a very nice pub. Would definitely visit again. I bet it's proper good on a Friday/Saturday night”

“Came after seeing it was dog friendly and some good reviews. Came in and went to go toilet with my partner as i am disabled i cant just sit at a table alone. Then one of the workers decided to come up to me, get in my face and with a disgusting attitude asked me as to why i am waiting for my partner to finish in the toilet? She then went past staring at me twice. Then came back and started interrigating me asking if we have just come in to use the toilets. Being someone with a disability with a toilet access card gives me that right anyway? Absolutely disgusted i am so in fact i did not stay and buy that drink.”

“Ok non alcoholic ciders are like £5,10 total with food was £17.50 for food and drink non alcoholic. It's fizzy apple juice mate, really like I don't drink alcohol this just Extortion, so then ordered the Philly cheese steak and all I got was nasty steak full of fat and grisle and way over cooked and was terrible. Chips were ok I guess. Na thanks terrible wouldn't be coming here again, staff are rude one staff just stepped on the funiture to get to the other side of the room, twice!, like so lazy could even move the the sofa chair just to get wherever he was going to?. Really this place is not for me. Wouldn't come back here again. Not worthy money. Horrible cheap wooden chair with crap uncomfortable cushions on them. Terrible place.”
