About Queen St Brewhouse

Queen St Brewhouse is a pub at 7 Queen St in Colchester, set in the city's oldest continually occupied commercial building. The structure dates to the 14th century, and its front windows are 18th century. Inside, the space is small, with dark walls, little nooks to sit in and a traditional tavern-style interior. Belgian beer is the focus, with Duchesse de Bourgogne and Bruges Zot among the bottles, and German beers and a large bottle range alongside. Draught specials, local beers and real ciders sit next to them, and the bar staff offer samples and advice on what to pick. Walls carry event listings and cartoon jokes, and live music runs on some nights. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return most for the Belgian and German beer range, with the bottle selection and draught specials drawing repeated praise. They name specific picks such as the Bruges Zot, a Duchesse de Bourgogne sour and a cherry beer, and several mention unusual ciders alongside local ales. Close behind is the bar staff, described as friendly, knowledgeable and happy to chat, with one barman giving samples across a huge range. The old building earns its own mentions, with dark walls, little nooks, walls covered in event listings and cartoon jokes, and a traditional tavern feel, and a couple note dogs are welcome. Live music on some nights and weekends comes up too. On the downside, one reviewer finds it quite cold inside because of the old house and a bit overpriced, though another calls the prices reasonable. Another says the decor feels all over the place and not for those wanting a trim and proper bar. One reviewer adds that the small space can get busy, and a few mention the toilets and snacks and comfortable seats.

“A very unique Colchester icon, rough around the edges, but that’s part of the charm. Unparalleled selection of beers, you will have to travel far to to find the same level of expertise and knowledge frustrated can be found from the bar/pubs owner. Do hunt out the Duchesse de Bourgogne, a fabulous Belgium sour, just don’t drink them all. Great sampling to be had with friends. Throughly recommended!”

“Went in for a look after hearing this was a little hidden gem .across the road from the museum you can easily walk past it but up the 2 steps and inside dark walls little nooks to sit and chat .Great barman gives good samples of a huge range of beers from across Europe. Snax and comfortable seats. They have music on several occasions. Out this on your list of good venues and places to drink that won't be full of children or loud chatting .definitely be back to sample more”

“A nice authentic pub with a good selection of beers. The only minuses are that it's quite cold inside since the pub is in a very old house + it's a bit overpriced.”

The Brewhouse stocks nearly 100 beers and ciders. The speciality is Belgian and German beers, with a rotating selection of draught craft beers, a good range of gins, whiskey and other spirits. The bar staff really know about beer. All Belgian and German beers are served in their bespoke glasses which adds to the experience. Live music, good people and great beer!”
