About The Old Poets Corner
The Old Poets Corner is a pub on Butts Rd in the village of Ashover, Chesterfield, with countryside around it. The kitchen makes its own sausages, and the food menu also lists pork belly and fish pie among its pub meals. Titanic Brewery real ales are on the bar, with guest ales alongside. Woodfires and candles on the tables give the traditional pub interior its character. Upstairs rooms let visitors stay overnight, and cooked breakfasts come with the stay. The pub also hosts live bands and events, with occasional beer festivals and quiz nights. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the ales, especially the Titanic Brewery range, with one counting seven or eight real ales and another noting five Titanic beers plus three guests. Food comes close behind, and the pork belly draws the strongest single endorsement, with one reviewer saying they would return just for it. A table of five also enjoyed steak, gammon, fish pie, fish and chips and a burger with real chips, followed by a crumble and a sticky toffee Christmas pudding. Woodfires, candles and a traditional pub feel are mentioned, along with friendly staff and a comfy, clean room for overnight stays. The main complaints come from longtime regulars who say the pub has declined since a takeover. One describes a tiny pie with barely any filling and a dirty table they wiped themselves, and another cites higher food prices, a weaker beer choice and a manager who was rude and shouted at younger staff. One reviewer notes the cooked breakfast had no cereals or fruit.

“We've always loved this pub and it has been a family favourite for many years. However, the atmosphere, choice in beers and price of food has declined over the past few visits. I called in today with my mum and found Dave incredibly rude. He was reluctant to help when I had a query about ordering food and he spoke terribly to the young lads that worked there, shouting at one of them and calling him a 'lazy arse'. It's such a shame as the atmosphere used to be an inviting cosy, village pub but unfortunately this no longer seems to be the case.”

“Only called in for a drink, there are a great selection of real ales,I counted about 7 or 8,lovely location, they are having a weekend of bands on August Bank Holiday which should be good.”

“Until I moved away, this place used to be a regular haunt of mine. Kim and the staff were excellent, the food was always top quality. I took my mum here a few months ago, as it was an ideal place to take her for a birthday meal, and I'd really bigged it up to her. I couldn't have been more disappointed. The takeover seems to have had a disastrous effect. Poor atmosphere. Dirty table - which I had to wipe down myself, as nobody else was doing it. Food portions were a joke - the smallest pie in the world, with barely any filling; literally, a load of pre-rolled pastry, with a small portion of chips - for the price they charge, it was a massive rip-off. Unfriendly staff. One positive , the beer I had was decent. When the previous owners were running it, you were always guaranteed of - cleanliness, friendliness, atmosphere, value for money, excellent portion sizes. What a shame they've allowed this to happen.”

“Stayed for one night but wished it had been two. Really nice touches in the room. Comfy bed. Dog friendly and food was outstanding. Will definitely be back”
