About Command House

Command House is a pub in Chatham on Riverside Gdns, opposite Fort Amherst and overlooking the River Medway. Dogs have their own menu of treats and bowl food, so visiting owners can order for their pets as well as themselves. The kitchen serves lunch, dinner and Sunday meals, with a roast sharing platter and a set menu alongside vegan and vegetarian options. Afternoon tea is offered for celebrations. The bar pours wines, beers and gins, and cocktails come on a 2-for deal. Downstairs, a second bar with a private-hire room opens for events such as live music, which gives groups space of their own. The pub is open daily.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often point to the setting by the river, with several describing drinks and meals on the outdoor seating overlooking the Medway, including one evening of cocktails while the sun set. The food earns close behind praise: a rump steak with chunky chips, beer-battered onion rings and peppercorn sauce, an Eton mess sundae, a fish dish described as cooked to perfection, and a roast sharing platter with beef and cabbage that one diner says could feed four. Staff are called friendly and helpful, and one reviewer enjoyed live music in the downstairs bar on a Saturday. Complaints are specific. One reviewer found the Ghost Ship ale well past its best with sediment in the glass, another mentions steep steps at the entrance, one paid for parking, and one says the order took a while when the pub seemed short staffed. At a charity event, one diner wished for something other than burgers. Reviewers also note how much the pub loves dogs, with a full menu of treats and bowl food for them.

“Great location with a historic backstory painted on the side of the pub as you approach. Two ales on, london pride and ghost ship, looks like there are four pumps though. Ghost ship was unfortunately well past prime with sediment in the bottom so cellarage could be improved. Steep steps to access the pub so unclear what you would do if you had mobility issues. Wide food menu which looked good.”

“Went to the Command house for the Ms charity day and to watch Marylebone Jelly and I can say is WOW what a day it was! Amazingly organised, atmosphere was incredible the staff were amazing. The organisers for the event you could see how much passion went into it. The young girl believe Ellie was her name you could see how much the day really meant to her and the support she received. There was a blonde girl that I didn’t catch her name but she was also amazing going round with raffle tickets and supporting her friend with this event and the owner of the command house the effort definitely didn’t go unnoticed. Everyone working all had a purple tshirt on to raise awareness for the cause. The food was delicious but only criticism would be I understand a small menu for busy events but maybe something other than burgers but overall was lovely. We stayed for the quiz and even though there was only 4 teams the effort the 2 girls put in to it and reading it out without a microphone because of technical issues. Even if Ellie did loose her voice half way through it was still overall a brilliant day and evening”

“We popped in for a drink and some dinner one evening, we sat outside by the river as it was a lovely sunny day. The cocktails were 2 for £14 so we had a few of those, really nice. The food was delicious and it was lovely to sit and eat outside watching the sun set over the river. Would definitely come back again, was a really nice relaxed evening.”

“Food was pretty good. Nice play with a lot of outdoor seating on a nice day and cool, intimate space inside when it's not. They did seem a little short staffed since it took awhile to get our order, but it was also kind of busy.”

“Following the recent menu change, I decided to go for a bit of lunch at the Command House. I ordered the 8oz rump steak with chunky chips, extra onion rings and peppercorn sauce. The steak was a decent thickness, was done a very satisfactory medium, well rested, and was tender. The onion rings were all of even dimension and coated in a light beer batter almost reminiscent of a tempura batter. Not heavy, and decently seasoned. Life's hard enough without bland onion rings on a rainy day in Chatham! Not so here! The peppercorn sauce was warmingly spicy, gently sweet and floral with pink peppercorn, and was nice eating. Very much like a pan sauce and not overly creamy. For pudding I had an Eton mess sundae. Decent cornish-esque vanilla ice cream, meringue, strawberries, a sweet and sharp coulis, and a healthy bit of squirty cream! Simple as you like, and done really well. I'll be back”
