Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the welcoming bar staff, described as accommodating and always happy to help, with one noting the bartender worked hard while on his own. Steak is the dish raised most. One diner found two steaks done to medium rare perfection, while another got a steak that missed that mark even after a replacement. Close behind are a burger with crispy bacon and melted cheese, fries, a ribs and chicken platter, prawn cocktail, chicken wings and mushroom sauce. A weekly quiz and England World Cup games add to the atmosphere for some. Complaints are scattered. One reviewer found the mixed grill out of stock, a hunters chicken not piping hot, and mushrooms dry and cold. Another finds no real atmosphere, citing tension among regulars, a wine that had turned and cocktails staff could not make well. That reviewer also reports vomiting after the meal. One notes the menu has stayed the same for a long while. Several mention a family and dog friendly pub with a kids' playground, and one closes on the free treats for dogs.

“Incred atmosphere, even better staff! Lovely team who work here that always make us feel welcome and always very accommodating. We’ve been here every England World Cup game (bar the first) and wouldn’t go anywhere else. Great beers, top tier food.”

“Decent sized pub with no real atmosphere apart from some tension between the regulars not being nipped in the bud by management. Staff aren't trained on how alcohol should taste leaving them unable to tell while wine is at the end of its life, they certainly couldn't tell you the tatsing notes of any alcohol if you wanted a recommendations based on your preferences. Took my wine back and taught the manager how to tell when wine has turned. The wine still wasn't the best so didn't finish it and went for a cocktail hoping they could make make a basic cocktail from the list of cocktails they offer. They are certainly not cocktail trained. Having worked in the industry I can put money on this. Food was dire and brought out so fast you know nothing is fresh. Spent the entire evening and today vomiting up said food. As for the atmosphere the only atmosphere was kids playing in the garden beyond what is probably a reasonable time for pubs to be child free and some strange unknown tensions going on between regulars and even staff to regulars which made the whole experience even more awkward. Simply nothing professional about this establishment unfortunately. :(”

“Very clean and nicely decorated pub. Went in for a meal and the guy behind the bar was excellent he was working hard as he was on his own. Food was very nice my only critiscm was that my steak wasn't really cooked medium rare as asked but they did offer to replace which they done - still wasn't exactly how I wanted but the rest was great. Mushroom sauce was delicious.”

Good to know

“Whether with family, friends, colleagues or clients, The Mast & Rigging is a wonderful new pub sitting at the dock of the bay (well, estuary). There’s every comfort you could possibly want – beer garden, children’s play area, free parking, free Wifi and wheelchair access. But what makes it so special is the quality of food and drink and exceptional value on display. Take a lingering look at our drinks menu. You name it, we’ve got it. Cask ales, crafts beer, cocktails, mocktails, super spirits, premium reds and whites, invigorating soft drinks and coffees with a kick. Pizzas are hand stretched and stone baked in our working pizza kitchen. Choose your style then pimp as you like. Our grills and burgers are dry-aged, seasoned and chargrille...”
