About Three Crutches

Three Crutches is a pub on Old Watling St in Rochester, close to the junction with the A2. The garden has a bouncy slide for children, so families with young ones have space to play outside. Downstairs, the bar and dining area can be cleared into a dance floor, and the whole downstairs area is used for private functions such as wakes, birthday parties and group lunches. The kitchen serves roast dinners and a mixed grill, with sticky toffee pudding and ice cream for dessert. The menu also caters for vegetarian, vegan and gluten free guests. Fairy lights decorate the restaurant, and the pub is open daily.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the pub as a venue for group occasions, including a funeral wake, a surprise 50th birthday and a vintage motorbike club lunch, where the bar and dining areas were transformed and the food was called excellent. Catering for gluten free, vegetarian and vegan guests is singled out, along with a roast dinner and hot roast potatoes at the wake. Close behind is the staff, described as friendly, attentive and welcoming, with the new managers called a great addition. Individual diners also mention delicious sticky toffee pudding with ice cream, steaks cooked as requested and the outdoor seating. The criticisms are few but specific. One reviewer found a steak sandwich overdone and the chips rock hard, suspecting they were reheated. Another had an item missing from the mixed grill, replaced with something else, and thought the Hugo Spritz zero not very Hugo Spritzish. One group had the music turned down so they could chat, and a family arriving with a walking frame was helped down the steps to their table.

“In early August I sadly had to arrange the refreshments for my Mums funeral party. It was a large event planned for 70 people or more. I was delighted at the efforts from Kyle and his friendly staff. The event was housed in the whole of the down stairs area of The Three Crutches. On entering I noticed the special touches of the table arrangements with flowers and pretty table runners. The food was excellent, catering for both gluten free and vegetarian guests. Everyone mentioned how impressed they were with the food, the variety, amount and quality. Definitely not the usual curly egg sandwich and squash as at many funerals. My personal favourite was the addition and unexpected hot roast potatoes. The garden was available for smokers and vapers with plenty of seating plus the addition of a bouncy slide for the little ones. Kyle was on hand and available had there been any issues. There were none. It was very reasonably priced and £1500 less than another venue that quoted, in close proximity. I would highly recommend Kyle and his team to host any function. He was polite and efficient , he listened and delivered. Well done Kyle and co. Thank you from and on behalf The Family of Noreen Chambers.”

“Firstly - I'd seen some of the less positive reviews here so went here feeling a little nervous. So first some context - I've known of the Three Crutches for years , but never visited. From my understanding it was always more of a pub than a restaurant historically, because of the limitations this creates, anyone going here expecting flawless is not really in the real world. First criticism I've seen is staff that aren't efficient, if this was genuinely the case, it must have been a really bad day ! Honestly, I can't fault the staff on my visit, attentive without being overbearing, and genuinely were much better than I've experienced in some premium restaurants. Speed of service, a few say service is slow, this definitely wasn't my experience, drinks order was taken promptly, food arrived within the time you would expect, steaks cooked EXACTLY as requested, nothing burnt, nothing dry. One item was missing from the mixed grill , this was communicated well and was replaced with something else. At a guess this is a consequence of the transformation of the industry where pubs have to become more food orientated to earn a living, food storage space is usually limited, so the odd product not being available shouldn't be an issue, I've seen much worse product availability at Harvester and Mitchell & Butler ! Prices are really reasonable. In the context of what the Three Crutches is the management and staff do an incredible job. My only criticism is the Hugo Spritz zero isn't very Hugo Spritzish. Have to say, we had a lovely evening and a decent meal”

“Six ladies of a certain age, we had lunch today. Staff were very attentive and welcoming. We had a lovely area to ourselves, the table gave us space to sit and chat. They kindly turned down the music to make our chatting easier. Can't fault a thing. Thank you so much.”

“Visited yesterday for a family get together. We arrived with my sister in law who uses a walking frame, Kyle arrived to help as soon as we entered, getting her down the steps and round to our table. The food was excellent, and the staff attentive. We'll definitely be back for the 4th time the next time we visit family.”

“Good atmosphere, Food was okay…. Had steak sandwich and was over done, poor example. And the chips that came on another plate were so over done rock hard unlike the extras we added so I’m assuming I got some re-heated ones first. Would have like to eat outside! Drinks great and great service and staff Will come back.”
