About Vegetarian Food Studio

Vegetarian Food Studio is a vegetarian restaurant at 115-117 Penarth Rd in Cardiff, with a menu that is both vegetarian and vegan. The kitchen focuses on Gujarati food, and the Gujarati thali puts two curries, dhal, naan and gulab jamun on a single order. Dishes can be made without onions and garlic, so the kitchen can leave both out on request. The menu also lists cashew nut curry and dahi puri, along with a starter platter. Masala chai comes with sugar on the side, so each person sweetens it to taste. The interior is fully painted with Indian-themed murals and art.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often return to the Gujarati thali, praised for massive portions and authentic flavour. One plate arrived with two curries, dhal, three naan breads and gulab jamun, and the diners could not finish it. One reviewer who has visited India said it felt like being back there. Close behind are the dahi puri, the cashew nut curry and the starter platter, and a reviewer who isn't vegetarian says meat isn't missed. Several describe the murals covering the walls as vibrant and warm, and the staff as welcoming and friendly, with good suggestions. The caveat is timing: one reviewer notes that on extremely busy holidays food can take a while to arrive. Another advises choosing the Gujarati dishes over the South Indian ones. Reviewers also mention chevdo bought to take home, a kitchen that cooked without onions and garlic on request, and masala chai served with the sugar separate.

“Found VFS from others good reviews and they're right, food was really really nice. I'm not vegetarian but the food is so good meat isn't missed. We particularly loved the Cashew nut curry, highly recommended. Tried the starter platter too which was delicious too. I'll definitely be back next time we're in Cardiff.”

“Good food and ambience! Opt for Gujarathi dishes rather than South Indian dishes.”

“An amazing choice of vegetarian/vegan food and the service was really good too. Completely stuffed and we bought some chevdo to take back home with us. They were able to make without onions and garlic too, for those who want that. Interior decor was really nice and very realistic as well. A great find for awesome food 👍🏼”

“We visited on Saturday early evening and were completely blown away. The interior is stunning, with murals covering the space and creating such a vibrant atmosphere. The service was absolutely excellent from start to finish. We ordered a Tali dish which came with two curries, dhal, three naan breads and gulab jamun and honestly we could not finish it all because the portions were huge! It was by far some of the best food we have had in a long time. The flavours were incredible. My partner, who has visited India, said it genuinely felt like being back there as it reminded him so much of the authentic food he had on his trip. Highly recommended!”
