About Baan Thai Street Food

Baan Thai Street Food is a Thai restaurant on Park Terrace in Cambridge, open daily. It opened in July 2020 under the same management as Bird Thai Noodle Bar in the market square, so the two Cambridge restaurants share an operator. The kitchen cooks Thai street food, and the menu includes papaya salad and Pad Thai Chicken. Garlic and pepper king prawns come with rice and a fried egg. The team asks diners about food allergies when taking orders.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the authentic Thai flavours, with the Pad Ki Mao Pork described as tender and as authentic as versions eaten in Asia. Close behind are the fish cake starter, the papaya salad, the spicy soup and the garlic and pepper king prawns served with rice and a fried egg. Friendly, quick service comes up repeatedly, along with window seats overlooking the park and prices described as good for Cambridge. Portion size draws a recurring caveat: one diner found the prawn stir fry smaller than expected and another wished the mains were more generous. The sharpest criticism comes from a reviewer who found the chicken satay dry like plain chicken breast, the rice clumped and partly hard, and the desserts and ice cream brought out less than ten minutes after a long wait for the mains. Another found the Kluay Khaek banana too thickly breaded and the milk tea too sweet and watery. Even so, one reviewer noted that staff kept asking about food allergies.

“A really cute and unfussy spot serving fresh and authentic eats. The fish cake starter was a real highlight along with the garlic and pepper king prawns main with rice and a fried egg. Quick and friendly service with lovely views of the park. Good prices too for central Cambridge.”

“Lovely little Thai restaurant, very reasonably priced with awfully friendly service!😊The staff were very welcoming and happy to help with answering any questions, as I struggled to choose with all the delicious options! The food came quickly and hot. My portion of the prawn stir fry was slightly smaller than expected but my partners pork dish was piled pretty high, so you likely get more of the other meats. Both were full of flavour. We sat by the window overlooking the green outside, it was a nice chilled vibe and got quite busy in to the evening. Highly recommend!!”

“only one word to describe this place would be delicious! i haven’t had Thai food in a very long time as good as this, not only authentic but everybody at the table was super happy and full up! nothing more i could ask for, if your looking for a delicious meal out with friendly staff and quick service! (forgot to mention, main came straight after starters!) another star… this is the definitely the place to come too! thank you staff and kitchen stuff for a delicious night out. 😊😋”

“Disappointing experience overall We were quite disappointed with our visit. The food took a long time to arrive, and unfortunately the quality did not match our expectations. The chicken satay looked quite different from the restaurant’s photos and tasted very dry, almost like plain chicken breast. The rice was also disappointing. For a Thai restaurant, rice is a basic element, but ours was clumped together, sticky, and some parts were still hard and undercooked. The service timing was also very poor. After we had waited a long time for the main dishes, the desserts and ice cream were brought out less than ten minutes later without anyone asking whether we were ready. This meant we had to rush our main course before the ice cream melted. Overall, the experience felt poorly managed and not very considerate of customers. I hope the restaurant can improve its food preparation and service timing.”
