About Al Casbah
Al Casbah is a North African restaurant at 62 Mill Rd in Cambridge, run by the same family since 1997. The kitchen cooks North African and Levantine dishes, with Algerian cooking among them. Tebikha, a tajine of artichoke, pea, broad bean and potato, sits on the menu beside a lamb tajine, and grilled meats come off the grill. The menu also has a large selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes, and baklava is served for dessert. The dining room follows a North African style, with a decorated ceiling. The restaurant opens daily.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the flavour of the North African cooking, with the tebikha, a tajine of artichokes, peas, broad beans and potato, called outstanding. Close behind are the cous cous royal, the lamb tajine, a mixed grill with tender meat cooked over the flame, and a grilled fish with prawns and rice. Reviewers also mention generous portions and a good range of vegetarian and vegan dishes. The cosy, warm decor and friendly, attentive staff come up repeatedly, and one reviewer notes it gets very busy and suggests booking beforehand. One reviewer gives a sharply negative account, describing hostile waitresses and saying they felt racially discriminated against. The same reviewer reports a cramped corridor table or a sticky window seat with flies, a lamb brochette arriving with just seven small cubes, and a mango passion fruit juice that tasted store-bought. Other reviewers describe quick service and fair prices. The baklava gets a rave, and one drinker compares the mint tea to liquid joy.

“An amazing, atmospheric, and authentic North Aftican family-owned restaurant. Food was delicious, the best Algerian food I've had outside of North Africa. Good sized portions too. The price was reasonable and the service was outstanding. Nasser was super friendly, attentive and extremely helpful with his recommendations. I'll be visiting again next time I'm in Cambridge.”

“If there were an option for 0 stars, I would give it a 0. Avoid this place at all costs ‼️⚠️ The waitresses served us with a hostile tone and a dismissive attitude that made us feel targeted and racially discriminated against, especially compared to how other customers were being treated. Upon arrival, the waitress’s tone was immediately unfriendly. We were given two awful seating choices: a cramped corridor next to the kitchen or a sticky window seat surrounded by flies. Before we ordered, a party of 8 left. We asked to move, but the waitress flatly refused, claiming a large group was coming and she needed 15 minutes to set the table up, so she couldn't move us. When that group finally arrived, they shuffled the tables, and there was a table for two completely empty right next to us while we were left stuck in the tiny window seats. The value for money was also terrible. I ordered the lamb brochette for £16.95, which arrived with just 7 small cubes of diced lamb. The portion size was shocking considering the price of the dish. I also ordered a mango passion fruit juice, which tasted exactly like store-bought Innocent juice rather than something freshly made, which was over £4. What was even more shocking was how the food was delivered. Another waitress was handling the cutleries on our table very aggressively as she took away one set from each person. Later, she even tried to snatch my plate away while I was still eating. After we finished our meal, we asked for a bill. Instead of bill, a dessert menu was literally thrown at us (which didn't surprise us by that point). When we politely asked for the bill instead, the waitress pulled an annoyed face as if our presence were a massive inconvenience. From start to finish, the hostility we experienced felt deeply personal and biased. For the high prices they charge, the food is a total rip-off, and the service we had was terrible. I would highly advise avoiding this place, especially if you expect to be treated with basic human respect.”

“We visited Al Casbah as a group of four for dinner and had a truly wonderful experience. We booked just a few hours in advance and were luckily able to get a table. The restaurant itself is incredibly cosy, with beautiful North African decor that creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. We ordered a variety of dishes each, including Tebikha (artichokes, peas, broad beans and potato tajine), cous cous royal, Salade djedj (chicken salad), and a lamb tajine. Every dish was genuinely delicious. The flavours were rich, comforting and deeply satisfying. The tebikha in particular stood out as absolutely outstanding. Portions were very generous, and there were also good vegetarian and vegan options available. Everyone at the table was very happy and left completely satisfied. The service was impeccable throughout the evening, attentive without being intrusive and very welcoming. I my opinion this is the best North African food I have had in the UK. Highly recommended for anyone looking for authentic, flavourful dishes in a cosy and warm atmosphere.”
