About The Free Press
The Free Press is a pub at 7 Prospect Row in Cambridge, about a five-minute walk outside the city centre. The bar pours a selection of traditional cask ales, and most of its draught beer comes from cask, which makes the pub a fit for drinkers who want real ale over keg. The kitchen cooks home-style pub food, including sausage and mash, fish and chips, and a beef Sunday roast, with chips served alongside several dishes. Vegetarian and vegan diners can choose between a vegan burger with basil and tomato and a Korean plant-based chicken burger. Inside, part of the room is heated. Dogs are welcome. Tables can be reserved by phone, and the team can often add to a booking at short notice.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the Sunday roast, with the beef roast called delicious, well prepared and full of flavour, and one visitor calling the value excellent. Close behind are the pub classics: sausage and mash, crisp fish and chips, ham, egg and chips, and a half roast chicken on roasted veg. One reviewer enjoyed a scotch egg and a steak with citrusy salad, and two praised vegan or plant based burgers, one with basil and tomato. Staff are described again and again as friendly, and the back garden, front patio and heated indoor section get mentions, along with dogs on the patio. A cask ale selection pleased one visitor, though another found the draught choice on the small side. Complaints are scattered: a phone booking that did not transpire, leaving one party at a table in the smoking area out front, a few undercooked chips, bland mashed peas, and slightly undercooked scallops. Another group had extra people added to their reservation at short notice, and one household received photos of possible access difficulties before their Sunday roast visit.

“I had the beef Sunday roast at The Free Press and it was absolutely outstanding. Everything was delicious, well prepared, and full of flavour. A proper British Sunday roast done right! The atmosphere was welcoming and authentic, exactly what you hope to find in a traditional British pub. Excellent value for money, too. If you’re visiting Cambridge and want to experience a proper Sunday roast, I highly recommend this place.”

“The food was some of the best pub food we’ve ever had. Their service was amazing — they were very happy to add more people to our reservation at short notice. The food also came out very quickly. The staff were so nice to us. And the garden area was lovely with a heated indoor section too. Definitely would recommend this place for Sunday lunch!”

“Best pub food we had i Cambridge. The sausage and mash was great and the fish and chips was crisp. Only drawbacks was that the mashed peas were a bit bland and the selection of draught beer was on the smaller side - most were from cask (which is not my style). The staff was friendly and helpful, big smiles and great service. We were sitting outside in the back garden and hearing the kitchen staff having a blast, laughing and singing along to the music. Loved it! We are for sure coming back!”

“We were looking for a traditional pub where we could have good food and relax and here we found both things. The staff is very friendly and you have different areas to enjoy your food, outdoors or indoors as well as in the back where they have a small garden. The dishes were generous and the vegan burger with basil and tomato was fantastic!”

“Lovely local pub about a five minute walk outside of Cambridge city centre. Been here lots over the past few years and every time they’ve had fabulous food (and value I think) great service, and a lovely, friendly atmosphere ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”
