About Champion Of The Thames
Champion Of The Thames is a pub in Cambridge at 68 King St, set in a converted former house with a fireplace in the main room. As a Greene King pub, it also serves guest ales. The Wolf Brewery beers include Black Wolf dark brown ale, and Abbot ale comes from the cask. The space is very small, so there is no hot food, and the bar snacks are quiche and pickled onions. No music plays, which keeps conversation at normal volume. Jonny may lead an old-fashioned sing-song. Dogs are welcome inside.

Customer Review Summary
Well-kept cask ale is what reviewers raise most, with the Abbot singled out twice, once as in fine form and once for the care taken with the casks. Guest ales come close behind, including Wolf Brewery's Black Wolf dark brown ale and Sirius Dog Star, at a Greene King pub. Several describe a tiny, cozy, traditional room with a fireplace, lots of wood and no music, where conversation carries at normal volume and the crowd is mostly regulars rather than tourists. Food is minor. One reviewer was told hot food isn't served but enjoyed a quiche with pickled onions from the bar snacks, while another doesn't know if food is available. The beer garden is described as having two seats, and one reviewer places an imported German pint at the pricier end of the list but found it worth trying. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and welcoming, and one bartender pours regulars their usual unasked and gave a table a free blind beer taste.

“Proper pub in a tourist town. Not many of these left. Pub of the year 2024. If you want a great pint then this is the place. Very central but hidden. Don't know if they do food but that is not what you come here for.”

“A great little pub. A good selection of guest ales, well kept. It's a pleasant change from the other pubs I've been to in Cambridge which are all quite touristy.”

“Took some time out from exploring Cambridge for the first time in a longtime and this looked like Champion Of The Thames was just the place to do it and that was a spot on hunch. The pub was busy, but fluked a table straight away. It's a Greene King pub, but also guest ales. Norfolk based Wolf Brewery is new to me, but if the beers are of the quality of their Black Wolf dark brown ale, can see myself taking a look at some of their other beers. Great atmosphere, it felt that beer and good company were the priority, can see myself going back when next in town and hopefully with a bit more time”

“We had a lovely pint in this pub, I think it was of their expensive end of pints imported from Germany, lovely drink was worth trying. £7.60 for the pint, but I think rest of the drinks are in standard prices. Bar staff was friendly and very nice atmosphere.”

“The Norfolk Pub & Club Awards of 2024 has credited Champion of the Thames as the best county pub for Cambridge. The award was based on scores from volunteers around Norfolk. I visited this pub on a warm summer day and took a local ale to my delight as it is refreshing and colourful. The pub itself has much been praised by its classic simplicity, British style of a drinking establishment. The bartender was helpful and his service is nice. It was really worth to sip a pint or more here. Old time patrons are a common view here. Greetings from Indonesia.”

“We're a traditional old boozer in the heart of Cambridge. We pride ourselves on our ales and we think that excellent, friendly service is really important, so that's what you'll get. You might also be treated to a good old-fashioned sing-song if Jonny's about (we take no responsibility for the quality of his singing).”
