About The Burleigh Arms

On Newmarket Rd in Cambridge, next to Midsummer Common, The Burleigh Arms is a pub with a cask ale selection and beers from around the world at the bar. The kitchen offers a three-course menu and a chef's tasting menu that covers most of the dishes. The scallop and tuna ceviche sits among the starters, and the mains include a smoky charcoal-cooked lamb and a curried lamb lasagna. A snacks section rounds out the menu, and the team updates it with new versions. The wine list includes pairing options and several wines by the glass.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often praise the head chef's cooking, and the lamb stands out: one describes a smoky, charcoal-scented cut, another a curried lamb lasagna with pickled jalapeños. Close behind are the snacks and starters, including scallop ceviche, tuna ceviche and a langoustine bite, along with desserts such as banana and toffee bread and butter pudding, rhubarb served three ways and a hazelnut and coffee pairing. A pork Sunday roast is called tender and delicious, and the wine list earns credit for cheap glass options and a white Malbec. Service is mostly described as friendly, and a couple of reviewers were there for birthday celebrations. The complaints are specific. One table of six found the sea bass arrived on its own, the pork tacos shockingly small and the portions too small for the cost, and only three starter sharing plates came for six people. Another party waited an hour for mains on a busy Sunday despite booking, with just two waiters on the floor. Several reviewers mention the head chef coming out to check on tables and ask for feedback.

“Phenomenal experience at the burleigh arms, all the courses were fantastic level, proper fine dining level quality foods and very friendly service by the whole team, I really loved the selection of snacks, tuna ceviche and lemon sole, the wine list was impressive too, lots of cheap glass options to pair with foods, highly recommend to everyone”

“We dined as a table of six and were disappointed. While the food we received was nice, the portions were far too small and lacked substantial sides to justify the premium prices. For example, the £37 sea bass came completely on its own, and the pork tacos small plate was shockingly miniature. The menu is better suited for a tasting experience than a main dining setting. The service also lacked attention to detail; when we asked for starter sharing plates, the staff only brought three for a party of six. They were also unable to identify what we were eating when asked and never bothered to find out for us. In general, we were pretty disappointed for the price point.”

“Wow, the new chef and the new menus are truly amazing, seriously blown away by fantastic quality of foods, lucky to try chefs tasting menu which was pretty much everything on the menu, the snacks were such flavour bomb, especially liked the langoustine one Scallop ceviche was very impressive too, the technique for the sauce is just immaculate, fish main was great as well, really liked the robust sauce with it, lamb was definitely my favourite, full of smokiness on the meat and really well cooked, that powerful charcoal scent definitely made it special and of course such banging sauce Desserts were all delicious, loved the hazelnut and coffee combination, my personal favourite type of dessert for sure and great way to finish the meal with citrusy cleanser Wine price was very cheap for the quality and decent pairing options for the foods, the service was great from both Max the waiter and Sam the head chef, really looking forward to visiting soon as this place does 10/10 cooking, perhaps not so far from getting Michelin star, I mean it”

“The food here is delicious and beautifully prepared. However, we unfortunately had to wait an hour for our mains. I completely understand that it was a busy Sunday, but booking a table in advance should come with some priority. Otherwise, the reservation system feels a bit pointless and leaves guests waiting too long. To make matters worse, having only two waiters, one of whom had just started, was simply not enough to provide good service.”

“This place has been recommended to me by family and friends, they specifically mentioned the Sunday roast. I had the pork roast dinner and it didn’t disappoint , it was delicious and very tender. Would definitely be coming back again , maybe next time for the evening menu! Beyond the incredible food, I also wanted to commend the excellent service I received. Our waitress, Holly, was outstanding. She was attentive, friendly, and always had a smile on her face. Her positive attitude really enhanced our dining experience.”
