About Town and Gown
Town and Gown is a pub at 8 Market Passage in Cambridge, set over three floors with barrel booths on the first. The bar pours Rivertown beers, brewed at the business's own brewery in Hertford, and mixes cocktails alongside them. The kitchen serves brunch and a Sunday roast with crispy Yorkshire pudding. The top floor is the Black Box Theatre, a fringe venue that hosts theatre shows and comedy nights. It can also be hired for private parties, corporate events and function bookings. Orders are placed at the bar, or through an app or QR code.

Customer Review Summary
The Sunday roast is the dish reviewers raise most, with praise for a crispy Yorkshire pudding, very crispy potatoes and cauliflower cheese with decent browning, though one finds only four small potatoes and a small stuffing ball not enough. Close behind is the laid back atmosphere, with the barrel booths on the first floor called the cutest and a large, open space where tables sit well apart. Others single out a crunchy bacciata, a virgin pornstar martini and friendly staff, and one notes quick service through the app, while another found the QR ordering not working. Complaints recur around noise: the music is described as loud enough to block conversation on a Friday night and too loud on a quiet Sunday afternoon. Food disappoints some, with a burger that was not hot enough and had a dry patty, small portions for the cost, and one diner told first that there was no veggie roast and then no burger, ending up with avocado on toast. One reviewer's dog was welcomed with a bowl of fresh water.

“Came here two nights in a row during a short break in Cambridge. This is a lovely bar, great decor, atmosphere and fabulous service from Ollie. Highly recommended.”

“While this is a cute place with nice vibes, I wouldn’t go back. We came on a Sunday for their roast. We ordered our roasts (I got the veggie one), and then the waiter came back to say there was no veggie roast. So I ordered the burger, again he came back to say there was no burger. After a couple attempts of this I ended up with an overpriced Avocado on toast, which was just 2 thin slices of toast with some poorly seasoned avocado on it, and some average chips for about £17! It was not worth the money at all, and the staff weren’t particularly sympathetic about the fact that they had no vegetarian main meal options.”

“A charming venue, provided nobody you’re with has anything to say. On a Friday night, the music is played at a volume seemingly designed to prevent conversation, independent thought, and possibly continued use of the inner ear. We arrived hoping for drinks and a chat; we left having communicated mainly through lip-reading and concerned facial expressions. If your ears aren’t bleeding, you’re probably not standing close enough to the speakers.”

“Popped in after my son's graduation. Service was quick using the app, the food was absolutely spot on and the staff were great. The toilets are up a couple of flights of stairs, but are a solid 8/10. Nice and clean, just had a slight smell in the gents. I would highly recommend this venue.”
