About MoonDance Cafe

The front of MoonDance Cafe gives little away, but this coffee shop on S Parade in Bristol opens out behind into more seating and a planted garden patio, so there is room to sit without booking. Service runs on a walk-in basis through the day, with breakfast served alongside lunch. The kitchen turns out toasted sandwiches, with fillings including bacon, brie and chutney, plus soup, olives as a side or with salad, and eggs on toast. Coffee is a mainstay, and a flat white sometimes arrives in a glass rather than a cup. The cake counter runs from a pecan pie slice to almond croissants, with cake to take away for eating off site. Tables outside at the front suit outdoor dining, dogs are welcome in those spaces, and high chairs mean families with young children can settle in. The cafe opens daily during daytime hours, and cyclists passing through the village stop in mid ride.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the staff, describing warm, welcoming, friendly service from the counter to the tables. Toasted sandwiches come next, with the Bacon, Brie and Chutney and the Sausage and Cheese called delicious. Others praise the cakes, a pecan pie slice, the butternut squash soup and poached eggs on toast with bacon, sausage and avocado. Several like sitting outside in the beautifully planted back garden, and one calls the cafe very dog friendly. Coffee draws mixed views. Some call it good or great, while one reviewer found the flat whites hot but weak, served in a glass rather than a cup, and the almond croissant far too sweet. Two otherwise positive reviews take issue with the owner. One diner who brought in a sandwich from elsewhere describes a hostile reaction ending in "don't do it again". Another says that when they raised a toasted sandwich arriving with only a few crisps, and a separate side salad of two cherry tomatoes and three olives, they were simply asked whether they had enjoyed the salad.

“First time visit to Chew Magna, lovely little village and looked forward to trying this cafe. The place and food+drinks itself was lovely and what we wanted. The waitresses at the front making coffee were also really kind and helpful. Only reason I have put 3 stars and not 5 is the issue with the owner. In all fairness we brought in a sandwich from elsewhere, we paid for two coffees and a cake here. The owner came over and was very rude and hostile towards us doing this. Would have been no problem if she asked us to put the sandwich away, we just had an issue with her attitude. After hesitating and grimacing, she rather uncomfortably said “it’s ok” and then in a deadpan way said “don’t do it again” before turning around walking off. It made the vibe a lot less inviting. Apart from this it is a nice spot.”

“Fabulous little cafe. We stopped there for breakfast on our travels. Delicious food, great coffee and friendly staff 😊 Can’t get better than that!”

“Had lunch there - it's a really nice cafe looking small from the front, but actually having plenty of space to sit outside in the beautifully planted back garden. Food was tasty and plentiful.”

“Disappointed to pay £8 for a toasted sandwich for it to arrive with a few crisps on the side, no salad - so had to pay £5 for a side salad that consisted of 2 cherry tomatoes, 3 olives, a spoonful of chopped cucumber and a handful of lettuce, with some feta crumbled on top! When I pointed out that I’d expect a small side salad with a sandwich that cost that much to the owner - I was asked did I enjoy the salad with the dressing! No taking on board my comments or feedback- after spending £50 for lunch for two people - we won’t be back! Yes the sandwich was nice but not worth £8, I don’t care where your cafe is!”

“Turned too early this morning. 25 miles into a bike ride and found it closed. Asked why it wasn’t open as they open at 9 and found it wasn’t 9 yet!!😂. Sat outside waited a few minutes and had my cake and coffee next stop Cheddar.”
