Quick info
About Espresso Coffee Shop
Espresso Coffee Shop is an Italian-run coffee shop on Upper Maudlin St in Bristol, where the Sardinian owner's background brings house-made cannoli, including a gluten-free version, to a counter that also holds cakes, pastries and an almond croissant. The kitchen cooks to order, so a full English arrives alongside sandwiches made when they are ordered. Coffee comes from a barista working at the counter, and several of the team speak Italian. There is no booking; customers order at the counter and take a table as they find it. The café runs Monday to Friday during the daytime and closes at weekends. A step-free, wheelchair-accessible entrance lets visitors with mobility needs get in without help, and high chairs are on hand for families with young children.

Customer Review Summary
The welcome is what reviewers raise most, with regulars describing staff who remember faces and greet them warmly, and one visitor saying the barista talks them through making a coffee. Close behind is the baking, singled out repeatedly: the cookies, crunchy outside and gooey with chocolate in the middle, in chocolate sea salt, walnut and triple chocolate, and the cannoli, including gluten free ones filled with ricotta and chocolate or pistachio and salted caramel. A young reviewer names the almond croissant as the best they have had, and others mention the full English, banana and Nutella pancakes, freshly made sandwiches and a latte they rate highly. Several note food arrives quickly even when the place is packed, and more than one calls the cakes and pastries house made. One reviewer reports getting sandwiches through a surplus food bag that tasted of mould and reports days of illness afterwards. Several say they would happily travel back just for the cookies.

“This cosy little café is honestly one of my favourite establishments in the entire city. The owner Nico is a lovely Sardinian gentleman, who brings an Italian flair to the place, he cares greatly about the quality of the service, the quality of the food and drinks and for his customers, it shines through in every aspect of the place. The barista Tyler will always greet you with a warm smile, she will ask how you are and make you feel like you've been going to the place your whole life, she also makes the best latte this side of the Atlantic. The chef Suzie cooks with finesse and technique worthy of a Michelin star restaurant, her food is impeccable, I've actually run out of positive adjectives to describe it, she clearly knows how to run a kitchen like nobody you've ever met before, even when the place is packed you will never be waiting long for your food and it is always fresh and delicious. Coming here is genuinely the favourite part of my working day, I would give it 6 stars if I could.”

“Got a too good to go bag, two sandwiches tasted of blue cheese but i didn't see that they were not blue so they were actually mouldy cheese... got massive food poisoning and diarrhoea for 3+ days after that 100% would not recommend”

“Stumbled across this hidden gem by pure chance! Walked in to a warm, polite welcome and the food was superb. I had the full English and my son had banana and Nutella pancakes. Highly recommended and will definitely be back.”
