About Bakesmiths

Bakesmiths is a coffee shop at 65 Whiteladies Rd in Clifton, Bristol, with a bakery that makes its own breads. The counter holds a constantly changing range of cakes and savoury and sweet goods, and cakes can be taken away, with the cardamom bun among the bakes. Breakfast includes a bap, and toasties are on the menu for lunch. Coffee and cake sit at the centre of what the kitchen and counter turn out. Orders are placed at the counter, and drinks are brought to the table for anyone sitting upstairs. Seating is on the ground floor and upstairs, with plenty of space and light inside.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return to the coffee and cake, with the counter of cakes drawing repeated praise. The cheesecake, the raspberry cake, a lemon slice and lemon cake, and the cardamom bun are all named, and iced coffee and a well-made cup of tea get good words too. Close behind are the toasties at lunch and breakfast dishes like a tasty bap and a vegetarian omelette, plus a fresh smoothie. Many describe the space as light, roomy and lovely, though one notes it can get quite noisy with many people working on laptops. Service splits. Several call the staff friendly or charming, but one breakfast diner described the two front of house workers as miserable, sighing at waiting customers and dropping plates onto the table. Others cite the granola, which came with dried fruit and a boxed granola rather than the fresh fruit listed, a salty poached egg, small bread portions, and a wait for drinks after ordering at the counter. One update says the place has improved. One reviewer praised staff who cut up a lemon, wrapped it in a brown paper bag and added the receipt.

“Really lovely breakfast during my visit. The bap that I had was really tasty, size wise it was perfect for a light breakfast plus the smoothie that I had was fresh and smooth. The staff was really friendly and even went the extra mile to check with the kitchen staff if they have some of the ingredients because I originally wanted an English breakfast but I am happy with the bap that I had. The place was very cozy and they have some lovely interiors. Would love to visit again. 5 ⭐️”

“Love the cardamom bun. Great iced coffee, thanks Matia and team”

“On arriving we were just standing around not sure if we needed to wait to be seated or to order and no one was coming near us so we had to ask. The granola was very disappointing for what we paid, it said it came with fresh fruit but it was dried fruit and the granola was from a box. The poached egg was too salty. For the green element it was bad to see them using a paper cup for your tea bag rather than a little delph container and the tea cup was plastic.”

“Went in yesterday morning for breakfast. The place looks great, lots of seats. Food was fantastic, so was the coffee. The thing that really let the business down was the two girls working front of house. They were SO miserable, borderline hostile, sighing upon seeing you waiting to order, dropping plates on to the table like they hate you. SO bizarre! Do they recognise customers keep them in a job and they're the whole point of them turning up? Strongly recommend getting them both replaced with people who actually want to be there.”

“Great atmosphere, delicious coffee, and tasty desserts. However, it can get quite noisy, and there are often many people working on their laptops.”
