Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the home made food and generous portions, naming the Sunday roast, a steak and ale pie made on the premises, the mixed grill, a ribeye steak, and mash one diner calls the best they have tasted, with sticky toffee pudding and strawberry sundae to finish. Large parties describe pre-ordered meals arriving quickly and piping hot, and several find the staff welcoming and helpful. One reviewer notes booking is advised because of the pub's popularity. Criticism is less frequent but specific. One diner waited an hour for orders to be taken and found the sausage and mash with onion gravy heavily salted. Another reports a dry lasagne, a soggy chicken burger bun and a very dry roast turkey dinner, and a third found the sweet and sour chicken had no flavour. The garden is a recurring highlight, with a large enclosed play area for children, a play park that reads like a calisthenics park, and outdoor tables, some under cover.

“My first time here and I will be back. Mark and the team made us very welcome even addressing me by my name when I entered! The menu had lots of choice and the food did not disappoint all home made and I have to add the best mash I have ever tasted .... it was reasonably quiet when we were there but I imagine it is very busy during peak times of the day ... great food that was piping hot and fantastic service ... thank you so much ... a really lovely evening x”

“A popular local pub with very good quality, traditional pub food. The steak and ale pie I had was made on the premises using locally supplied beef, was fantastic quality and filling, using ale available in the pub at the time. Lots of seating but booking advised due to popularity.”

“A great pub with a fantastic beer garden and play park (for kids and adults it seems)...verging on a calisthenics park- 10/10. Best pub park I have ever seen. Guinness and pull ups...great combo. We did not eat here so cannot comment on the food, but it looked fantastic.”

“Until this visit we had always been pleased with the food, the service and atmosphere at The New Inn, Mayshill, Coalpit Heath. Our experience today though was far from satisfactory: We arrived for our booking as planned, but had to wait an hour before our food orders were taken. We picked up on the strange atmosphere, the usual manager was nowhere to be seen, I wondered if he may have been overloaded with work in the kitchen. Of the staff who were customer facing, they seemed as though they really didn’t want to be there and seemed focused on slowing down the service. The food itself was okay, although less seasoning would have been preferable in the Sausage and Mash with Onion Gravy. Nobody bothered to ask if everything was alright with the meals, or if we required more drinks and because of the overload of salt used in the preparation of my food, I had to get up and go to the bar to get another pint 🤷🏻. From the last of our group finishing their main course, we were ignored for another twenty minutes. Then we asked for a menu to choose deserts. After another considerable delay, we were asked what we’d like, by then we had already decided to do without. The reaction of the young woman was astonishing and disappointing for someone working in the retail trade, she went back to the bar, where she was seen to be arrogantly mocking us, taking sideways glances whilst making derogatory remarks to her colleagues. Decent places to eat and drink are becoming increasingly more difficult to find and it’s disappointing but the New Inn is no longer one we’d bother with again. CONTINUED: I’m following up from the rather strange response below from The New Inn. In summary their CCTV footage cannot be relied upon, as they have been unable to correctly identity us amongst the vast numbers of other customers there at the time 🤦🏻‍♂️. Presumably the picture quality was poor, or the clock needed to be re-set. 😁👍🏼”

“A very welcoming hostlery, the staff were very pleasant and helpful. The indoor dining space is very pleasant and the is also plenty of tables outside in the garden some of which are under cover. The food is very good at a very reasonable price and is sufficient to challenge even the healthiest of appetites. Children are welcome and are well catered for with a large enclosed play area.”
