Quick info
About RYBKA (the fish likes to swim)
RYBKA (the fish likes to swim) is a fish and chips takeaway on Meeting House Ln in Brighton. The menu opens with a roll mop (pickled herring) and vodka starter, with the vodka served in an ice-chilled glass, so a meal can begin with a drink and a small plate together. The fish and chips use haddock, and the chips are thick-cut and triple-cooked. Cod is sometimes unavailable, and coley then appears as a catch of the day. Mushy peas, curry sauce and homemade tartare sauce come alongside. A supper for two is on the menu for those eating together. Draught beer and craft beer collaborations make up the drinks list, and milkshakes are available too. The shop opens every day of the week except Tuesday, when it is closed.

“Genuinely one of the best fish and chips I've had in a while. The fish was incredibly fresh, flaky, and cooked to perfection—you could tell it hadn't been sitting around. The batter was light, crispy, and not greasy at all. The curry sauce was a perfect match and honestly took the whole meal to another level. It wasn't overpowering, just enough spice to complement the fish. The tartare sauce was creamy, fresh, and had a lovely herby flavour too. The portions were generous and excellent value for money—we definitely didn't leave hungry. We also tried the calamari, which was crispy, tender, and well-seasoned. Friendly service and great quality all around. We'd definitely come back!”

“Overall, it was an okay experience. The fish and chips were good, but I felt they were quite expensive for what you get. I’ve had fish and chips from local takeaway shops that were just as good for a lot less money. The chips weren’t really my thing because I prefer thinner fries, but they also didn’t seem to be cooked that well as some were a bit uneven. The milkshakes were okay too. They weren’t bad, but they didn’t really stand out either. Overall, the food was decent, but I don’t think it offered great value for the price. It wasn’t a bad meal, but I was expecting a bit more considering the cost.”

“Super fresh and delicious fish and calamari! The triple cooked chips were really good too. Underrated imo because the fish and calamari were so good… Possibly the best we’ve ever had!! Would 100% go back if we’re ever in Brighton again. (We ordered the Fish Supper for 2 - £40)”

“This was only half the meal deal for two. I’d eaten the scampi’s before remembering I wanted to take pics. The food was outstanding. Clearly freshly cooked to order. The staff were friendly and this is definitely the best fish and chips I’ve had in Brighton. It feels contemporary rather than traditional. Very high quality. Coley was catch of the day and it matched the haddock.”

“Nice fish and chips around the brighton area, price is on a higher end, However I think it worth the price. Ordered the haddock and chips, usually i order cod but they dont have cod available. Chips are thick cut. The haddock is surprisingly nice, the batter doesnt look the best, but taste is nice. Will visit again if in brighton area.”
