About The Coconut Tree Bournemouth
On Old Christchurch Rd in Bournemouth, The Coconut Tree Bournemouth is a Sri Lankan restaurant at number 185-187 that brings Sri Lankan street food to the UK. The kitchen serves it as small "Sri Lankan tapas" plates, so a table can order several dishes across vegetables, meats and fish. The menu is naturally vegan and vegetarian-friendly, which gives plant-based diners and mixed groups plenty to choose from. A drinks list of Cocotails, the restaurant's own name for its cocktails, sits alongside the food. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the goat curry, praised as tender and rich with spice, while the chicken kottu is called the standout by another diner and the black pork and mixed seafood earn their own mentions. Egg hoppers, fish curry and the mixed fried rice also appear among the dishes people enjoyed, and several describe the flavours as authentic and spicy. The cocktails and mocktails, including a pina colada, draw praise, and the staff are repeatedly called friendly and welcoming, with a few noting help choosing dishes as first-timers. Portion size is the most recurring caveat: a few say the plates are small and that about three dishes per person were needed to feel full. One returning diner found sticky tables, used plates and glasses left uncleared through three courses, and only a couple of beers available, all in cans. The harshest review called the fish curry rubbery with a flavourless sauce, and the chicken curry no better, so most of the meal was left unfinished. One diner described the menu as "Sri Lankan tapas.

“My daughter and I were holidaying in Bournemouth and wanted to eat something we hadn’t eaten before. We’d shortlisted TCT and then booked through First Table. It far exceeded our expectations. Wow!! Great selection of cocktails (which are always on a deal). The food is absolutely outstanding. Our host described it as “Sri Lankan tapas” so we ordered a variety of dishes including an egg hopper to start then chicken katthu, fish curry, goat curry and fat sister. We had more than enough food for both of us. All dishes were exceptionally tasty. Service was excellent - very friendly. We were early so it was quiet but the decor and aesthetic is great so I imagine with a fuller house the joint would be jumping. This is definitely not be missed!!”

“First impressions as you walk in the place smells like a toilet. No idea how this isn’t blatant to the staff but that’s already off putting. Look at the menu and nothing stands out, I ask for help from the staff and recommendations- one such recommendation was the fish curry. Iv never tasted anything so colourful yet has no taste. The fish was way too rubbery to be fully cooked, the sauce was just colored water with zero flavor. My partner had the chicken curry and she had the same impression. I look around and there are dirty tables everywhere that were empty when we got on but no one cleaned it the whole time. Having to try and eat with toilet smell constantly assaulting your nose. Honestly will never go there again. In the end we left most of the food because we just couldn’t force ourselves to eat it. It was disgusting. Overall terrible experience. Terrible flavorless food, small portions for the price, not very clean venue. Don’t waste your money.”

“The Coconut Tree Bournemouth serves some great food. The waitress who took our order did mention that the portions were on the smaller side and that ordering about three dishes would be best to get us full. We only realized what she meant after the food had finally arrived and we had eaten it. We ordered the chicken kottu (their MVP) and the mixed fried rice. They were both quite spicy. I usually don’t like spicy food, but the flavours literally had me crying—not just because of the heat, but also with joy because of how delicious they were. This was my first time trying Sri Lankan cuisine, and I’m already in love!”

“This was our first time dining here, and we had a wonderful experience. The food was absolutely delicious, including the kids’ meals. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. A special thank you to the Tamil staff member, whose genuine smile and warm kindness made us feel so comfortable throughout our visit. Her positive attitude truly stood out and made our experience even more memorable. Thank you so much 😊”
