About The Covered Wagon Birmingham
The Covered Wagon Birmingham is an Indian restaurant and desi pub in Birmingham, found at 298 Yardley Wood Rd. The Wagon Special Sizzler is a plate made for sharing, which gives a group one dish to split. The mixed grill comes in regular and large sizes and includes lamb chops, while butter chicken anchors the curry list. Naan, garlic naan or roti and pilau rice go with the curries, and poppadoms come with mint sauce and mango chutney. Paneer and soya dishes cover vegetarian orders. Tables are walk-in, with no booking needed. The pub side has a bar serving draught and bottled beer as well as spirits, and drinks are ordered at the bar.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often return for the butter chicken, described as rich and moist, with the Wagon Special Sizzler and the mixed grill close behind. Others single out the keema curry, chicken saag, lamb rogan josh and butter paneer, and one reviewer praises the soft roti and naan for mopping up sauces. Several call the staff friendly and attentive, and a vegetarian reviewer notes plenty of soya options alongside the paneer. The draught and bottled beers get a nod from one diner, though another finds the drinks selection surprisingly limited. Complaints are sharper but less common. One reviewer found the lamb chops heavily seasoned, which gave them a belly ache, and got only two chops with a large mixed grill. Another calls the masala chips genuinely awful. A one-star account describes repeatedly going to the bar to ask for service, a server reminded three times, and only serving spoons for dessert despite a service charge. Portions are big enough that a couple of diners take sizzler leftovers home for the next day.

“Desi Pub, Birmingham – Worth a Visit If you find yourself in Birmingham, make time for this desi pub. The food is the real highlight. The mixed grill was fantastic – juicy meat and full of flavour. But the clear star of the show was the butter chicken. It was outstanding: the sauce was rich and delicious, and the chicken was incredibly moist. I couldn’t stop eating it. The roti on the side was excellent too – soft and perfect for mopping up the sauces. Staff were super friendly and genuinely welcoming, which made the whole experience even better. A couple of downsides: the masala chips were genuinely awful – I’d skip them entirely. And despite being a pub, the drinks selection was surprisingly limited. Overall, a really enjoyable place. I’d happily recommend it for the food if you’re in Birmingham – just stick to the mains and avoid the chips.”

“I was really disappointed with the service and lack of dining service etiquette. We had to go to the bar to ask each time for service for order, than drinks and twice to the clear the table. The male service staff had to be reminded 3 times! For desert we wee give servings spoons...lack of cutlery! Terrible service for and we paid for the service charge! We spent over £200 on meal bar tab was separate... So disappointed! differently will not recommend and there are other restaurants was better service I'm sure. Basic food too!”

“So no offence but the food was a little over hyped for my liking. I’ve had better. The lamb chops were nice but ALOT of seasoning just on the lamb like a little too much for me, gave me a belly ache tbh. Also only got two lamb chops with a large mixed grill so I had to order more food smh. I’ve been to other places where you get 3 lamb chops for the same price not caked in seasoning. The food for me was just okay. Very mid. Wasn’t as amazing as people made out to me lol, but I guess everyone’s idea of amazing places to eat are different. Think I spent around £80+ including some soft drinks. Large mixed grill, chips, nann bread (x2 portions) extra lamb chops and rice. Don’t think I’d be going back if any one I know said they were going there. Definitely not. Very good service though from our waiter (she was lovely, funny & down to earth)”

“My favourite place for a curry in all of Birmingham. The grills are good but the curry is even better. I normally have the Jalfrezi but last night I had the chicken and lamb rara with a pilau rice and garlic naan. My vegetarian wife loves it here. The butter paneer is her go to dish but she loves that there loads of soya options as well. The beers are great too. As it's a pub there are a wide range of options to have with your curry. Shout out to Bruce serving us. He great, attentive yet not overbearing.”

“Great food at reasonable prices. Lovely venue and friendly staff. We didn't have to wait long for service or for our food and drinks to be served.”
