About tamatanga

tamatanga is an Indian restaurant and cocktail bar on Navigation St in Birmingham, close to New Street station. The kitchen works from Indian street food and small plates, and the bar pours cocktails, beer and wine alongside them. The curries include Keralan lamb curry and Punjabi butter chicken, and the chicken biryani comes with raita. Two naans come with each dish. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are part of the menu as well, so mixed tables can order across it. Staff explain that food arrives as it is cooked, so plates may reach the table at different times. Tables can be shared with other parties.

Customer Review Summary

Lamb curries lead the praise, with the Keralan lamb curry described as tender with a well balanced coconut flavour, and the butter chicken and Delhi lamb curry also singled out. Close behind is the service, where reviewers repeatedly credit individual servers as attentive, friendly and welcoming, including one who offered recommendations around spice tolerance and type of meat. Drinks such as the guava cocktail, the fresh, soft garlic and coriander naan, and vegetarian dishes like the ragda pattice and five spice aloo also earn mentions. The complaints are about specifics. One diner found the chaat bland, and a friend's dish disappointed too, so they left to eat elsewhere. Another found some chicken pieces gristly in the garlic chilli chicken. A Sunday visitor felt misled by a daytime deal banner that only applies on weekdays and wanted a bigger cup or refill for the chai. Others mention a cramped room, slow food on a busy lunch, shared tables, and strong sun at a table with no other seat free. One reviewer noted that dishes arrive as they are cooked, so food may come at different times.

“We had a really wonderful time at Tamatanga. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was lively, welcoming, and vibrant. The food was consistently delicious—full of rich, authentic flavors, beautifully spiced, and served fresh and hot. Everything we ordered hit the mark. What truly elevated our visit, though, was the outstanding service from Lynn Lett. She was attentive, warm, and made sure we had everything we needed without ever feeling rushed. Her friendly energy and prompt attention made the whole evening feel special. Great food paired with top-tier service is hard to beat. A big thank you to Lynn and the team—we will definitely be coming back! Highly recommended!”

“had amazing food and drinks at tamatanga last week. My friends and I were welcomed in and served by a lovely staff member named Chelsea who gave us food and drink recommendations which we absolutely loved! We came in with no idea of what to eat and Chelsea was really attentive, making sure she gave us options that fit our needs (spice tolerance, type of meat, etc). We had a great time and would like to thank Chelsea and Tamatanga as a whole for their amazing customer service. Keep it up ;)”

“We came on a sunday before 17:00 seeing the advertisement outside saying Daytime deal. However they said this is during the week day…it did not say on the banner and it felt a bit misleading to have it in front and to say its not today… The food on the otherhand was lovely! The butter chicken curry and kerara lamb curry was amazing! The peshwari naan was quite messy to eat but having two naans per dish was great. The chai on the other hand for £2.5 I was either hoping a bigger cup or refil allowance. Overall we enjoyed our visit but feel it could be improved.”
