About Hen & Chickens

Hen & Chickens is an Indian restaurant and pub in one, on Constitution Hill in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter. A bar fills the front of the building, and a larger dining area sits at the rear for sit-down meals. A TV on every wall carries live sport. The kitchen cooks North Indian food, led by a mixed grill that also comes in a small size, with curries that include keema curry and roghan josh. Beer is served on tap alongside the rest of the bar. The restaurant is open daily, and drinks are ordered and paid for at the bar.

Customer Review Summary

The complaints are specific. Two reviewers report a hair in their food, one in a roghan josh and pilau rice ordered through Uber Eats, the other on top of a keema curry, where no discount was offered. Others call the curries bland, say the prices are high for what arrives, and mention better Indian food elsewhere. One diner was seated by the door in an empty restaurant, found it freezing, and was told to ask someone else when requesting a move.

“Love the idea and vibe of this place. Food was great and good beer as well. What more could you ask for. Does not say open late which in my opinion is good. Good place to watch all the World Cup matches due to the fact of them having an TV on every wall . Can’t wait to go back again”

“Really bad experience. This was my second visit to The Hen and Chickens and it will be my last. My first visit we found a long hair on top of the keema curry. Absolutely disgusting and they didn’t even offer a discount. The prices are outrageous. Better Indian restaurants in Birmingham.”

“Great Indian food in a informal restaurant. Ideal for all sizes of parties. Staff helpful and happy to answer any questions. Small mixed grill comes with plenty of food”

“Absolutely disgusting experience. I ordered pilau rice and a roghan josh via Uber Eats, and I found hair inside the food. This isn’t a small mistake — finding hair in a meal is a basic hygiene failure. It shows a complete lack of food safety and raises serious concerns about how this kitchen is run. If hair is ending up in customer food, what other health standards are being ignored? I lost my appetite completely and felt sick just looking at it. This is unacceptable for any restaurant, let alone one taking money for deliveries. I do not recommend ordering from here. Ordering takeaway should not come with health risks. I will never order again.”

“Took my nieces here and the experience was bizarre from start to finish. The service was poor, and I’ll leave it at that. Although the restaurant was completely empty, we were seated in the bar area between a group of men watching sports. I usually don’t mind a more relaxed dining atmosphere, but we were placed right by the door and it was freezing. It felt odd given there were plenty of other available tables in the main restaurant. When I asked if we could move, I was told to ask someone else, which just added to the confusion. The curries themselves were also disappointing — very bland and lacking in flavour. For the price, I would recommend Indian Brewery just down the road instead. You’ll get a much nicer curry and a far better dining setting for your money.”
