About The Gate
The Gate is an independent pub on Barnet Rd in Barnet, set in a cottage-style building with open fires and a modern extension. The kitchen is geared up for dining and works from a menu of 10 dishes, including Sausage And Mash, a Homemade Beef Burger and BBQ Spare Ribs. Tables can't be booked, so the pub runs on a walk-in basis only. A renovated conservatory area adds to the indoor space, and a garden completes the site.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the salmon, praised as fresh and well cooked and served with sweet potato fries and salad, with the sea bass fillet also called a standout. Close behind are the generous portions, the haddock fishcakes starter, the spicy chicken wings and the fish and chips, along with the garden, terrace and shaded seating. Several call the food good and reasonably priced, and one praises the wine and the London Pride ale. Slow service is the recurring complaint: one reviewer describes waiting a long time for staff to attend the table, another says food and drinks took longer than expected, and a third waited over 15 minutes just to be brought the card reader. The same 2 out of 5 reviewer found the Thai red curry mostly rice and burnt naan with little meat or vegetables, and the teriyaki salmon disappointing. Others mention a chewy calamari, too little curry sauce with a katsu chicken, and a full car park at busy times. Even so, one reviewer calls the halloumi with chilli jam starter the highlight of the meal.

“This is a nice old pub with a modern extension and a garden, with plenty of shaded seating. It is very geared up for dining these days. The food is good and reasonably priced. Carpark can get quite full but there are a lot of spaces.”

“Service a bit slow but they are always busy. Great food tho 👍🏼 steak and ale pie needs mash not chips in my opinion 😁 . But will definitely visit again”

“We had dinner at The Gate in Arkley this evening. We’ve visited before and found it to be okay, but unfortunately this visit fell well below expectations. The atmosphere was pleasant enough, and the recently renovated conservatory area looks really nice. However, the service was the main issue. While the staff were not rude, they lacked warmth and attentiveness, and everything felt unnecessarily slow. It wasn’t particularly busy, yet we still waited over 15 minutes just to receive the card reader so we could pay and leave, which summed up the overall experience. The food was also disappointing. I ordered the Thai red curry with beef as a special, but it was underwhelming. The dish consisted mostly of rice and what appeared to be burnt naan bread, with very little meat or vegetables in the curry itself. It felt unbalanced and poorly executed. My partner ordered the teriyaki salmon and was similarly disappointed with her meal. On a positive note, the halloumi with chilli jam starter was excellent and easily the highlight of the meal. Overall, while the setting was fine, it was let down by poor service and a disappointing main course. Sadly, based on this experience, we wouldn’t plan to return.”
