About Pulpo Negro
Pulpo Negro is a Spanish tapas restaurant at 28 Broad St in Alresford, founded by Marie-Lou and Andres Alemany to serve cuisine from across the Spanish peninsula. It has held a Michelin Bib Gourmand since 2014. Food arrives as it is ready, tapas style, with dishes such as Padron peppers, Iberico ham and pulpo. A specials board lists the cuts of meat and seafood available that evening, and once they are gone, they are gone. The team accommodates allergies and dietary needs, serving sauces on the side. Downstairs, a space called the Cellar has a window that lets in natural light, and a private dining room is available for groups.

Customer Review Summary
Gambas are the dish reviewers return to most, called banging, alongside praise for the pulpo and the seafood in general. Close behind is the pregnant bread, described as a revelation and a game changer. Diners also single out the Iberico grilled pork, Iberico ham, padron peppers, tortilla and the vegetable dishes, especially the aubergine and patatas fritas. The cocktails, an Irish coffee and a rosé earn mentions, and homemade ice cream closes some meals. Several describe attentive, knowledgeable staff, including a group of eight with gluten, dairy, egg and soya allergies and vegetarians that found everyone catered for, with sauces served on the side. The main criticism is noise, with one reviewer finding the music slightly too loud at times and having to raise their voice to talk. Another found the tapas so different from the usual that they were unsure what to order, and staff suggested five dishes. Several suggest booking, noting a Friday lunchtime was rammed. One diner asked for steak more well done, and staff suggested cooking one side longer and leaving the other rarer.

“Truly lovely restaurant in a truly lovely town. Everythinh tested good and the service from Alex and team was superb. The pregnant bread was a revelation and Gambas was banging. Homemade ice cream to finish. Definitely recommend booking as it was rammed on a Friday lunchtime but they sat us outside which was lovely. We happened to be there when their new cook book was delivered. We will definitely ordering one on line”

“Pulpo Negro is, without question, the best restaurant I have eaten at in Hampshire — and I would go as far as saying it deserves a place among the very best in the country. I recently visited with my husband and a friend, and we all agreed that it was sensational from start to finish. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is electric. Vibrant, warm, and buzzing. It strikes that perfect balance between lively and intimate that so few restaurants manage to pull off. The service matched the surroundings every step of the way. Every member of staff was attentive and professional, but a particular mention must go to Paddy, who was amazing. Charismatic, friendly, and genuinely passionate — he’s exactly the kind of person who elevates a great meal into an unforgettable evening. Then there’s the food. The Padron Peppers were a perfect opener, The Iberico Ham was nothing short of sensational; silky, deeply flavoured, and clearly sourced with real care. But the undisputed highlight of the night was the Iberico Grilled Pork. I am not exaggerating when I say it is some of the best pork I have ever eaten. Pulpo Negro is a must-visit. Full stop. Do yourself a favour and book a table, you won’t regret it.”

“Had such a fantastic experience at Pulpo Negro the food was genuinely to die for. Every dish was packed with flavour, beautifully presented, and you can really tell there’s care and creativity behind the menu. There’s a wonderful variety to choose from too, which makes it hard in the best way to decide what to order! The staff were attentive, friendly, and made us feel really well looked after without being overbearing. The cocktails were excellent, perfectly balanced and clearly made with quality ingredients, and the Irish coffee was one of the best I’ve had in a long time. It’s honestly just too good to gatekeep, book early to avoid disappointment! I would absolutely recommend and will definitely be returning. The only small criticism would be that the music was slightly too loud at times, meaning you do have to raise your voice to chat. That aside, a brilliant dining experience all round!”
