About Lucky Lychee at The Green Man Winchester

Lucky Lychee at The Green Man Winchester is a Malaysian restaurant at 53 Southgate St in Winchester, with its kitchen run out of a pub. A noodle speciality is limited to 8 portions an evening, so it is a dish that is not always available later in the night. The menu includes satay skewers in beef and chicken, and chicken in a honey and marmite sauce that comes with milk bar buns to mop up the sauce. The bar adds a lychee cocktail to the drinks list. The restaurant opens Wednesday to Sunday and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. The pub also hosts weddings and wedding receptions.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the satay skewers, beef and chicken, described as juicy with a good char, and the sesame prawn toast, which one reviewer says is lifted by lemongrass. Close behind are the chicken with honey and marmite sauce, eaten with bread to mop up the leftover sauce, and the stuffed chicken wings. Other dishes named include beef rendang with red pickle, char siu with wonton noodles, braised pork with shiitake and ramen egg, and a grilled aubergine Malay yellow curry. For dessert, diners mention banana spring rolls, pandan cheesecake and strawberry ice cream, and one praises a lychee cocktail as refreshing. Two couples describe holding their wedding or reception here and credit the team with organisation and service. The main complaint is noise: one reviewer says the pub setting gets very noisy and detracts from enjoying the food, and another found the vegetable dishes mild and nothing exceptional. One reviewer notes the noodle speciality is limited to a handful of portions each evening and warns against adding too many chilli seeds.

“This place is an absolute gem. The food is so so good. The noodle speciality is to die for only 8 portions an evening so be quick and mind the chilli seeds, don't add too many. The chicken with honey and marmite sauce is exquisite accompanied by the milk bar bums to mop up the left over sauce. For desert the strawberry ice cream is gorgeous and the banana pancake rolls are fantastic. Highly recommended 5*...”

“Really lovely spot to enjoy some inventive, delicious food. It has the ambience of a cosy pub but the food is a refined take on Malaysian food. Had stuffed chicken wings for a starter - I have no idea how they achieve this, but it was the kind of dish that makes you smile with every bite. Then had a marmite/honey chicken dish which was brilliant too. Great cooking, exciting menu, I'll have to return some day!”

“AMAZING! The food is honestly the best Asian food I have ever tasted. James and the team are amazing and genuinely care about their guests. We hosted our wedding reception there, the value for money was great and the service was incredible! Thanks guys and I recommend anyone to give this place a go!”

“Probably one of the best days ever. What can we say? My partner and I got married here last weekend and we had the most amazing day. We can’t thank James, Nicole, Julian, Issie, Amelia and all the team behind the scene enough - their attention to detail, very good communication, organisation and incredible time keeping (Julian’s clipboard and scheduele!), attentiveness and the delicious food - all made our very special day even better. Our guests loved the food and we are still get messages about it. So if you considering an event or a wedding venue we couldn’t recommend enough! Another massive thank you!”
