About Nags Head

Nags Head is a pub on The Bridge in Abingdon, with a garden on the Thames where boaters can moor up and tables line the waterfront. The pub has several different seating zones, and multiple beers are on tap. Sunday roast includes roast beef with a large Yorkshire pudding, and a vegan beetroot wellington gives meat-free diners a roast of their own. A vegan mushroom pie is also on the menu. Live music is held regularly, and dogs are welcome. Parking is across the bridge, where a farm car park is the suggested choice because the other is mostly used by motorhomes.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often point to the riverside setting on the Thames, with a huge beer garden and plenty of waterfront tables, and the food served there. Vegan dishes stand out, including a beetroot wellington packed with grated beetroot and a mushroom pie one diner called among the best vegan pies in a long time. Close behind are a roast beef Sunday lunch with a large, crisp Yorkshire pudding, a cauliflower starter, a mushroom risotto and a prawn and crab linguine. Several praise the friendly staff, and one family describes the team accommodating their autistic son's particular food needs. The beer range on tap and the welcome for dogs also come up. The main complaint is a one-star account of a lager shandy that was at least half bubbles, with the reviewer saying the server walked off when it was handed over and that the drinks felt expensive. One boater also says past meals never impressed them before a recent risotto and linguine. Service was a little slow on a busy bank holiday Sunday, though staff stayed cheerful. One diner arrived an hour early and was seated at the bar.

“Back in the day, some genius knocked the pub around a bit and renamed it The Mill House; directions to the pub pointed you towards Nags Head island...and the only reason that anyone knew where Nags Head island was...oh it's just too stupid to compute. This is very much the definitive version of The Nags Head - truly magnificent. Now, about The Upper Reaches..? I realise how lame it is going around taking pictures of your meals but it's actually far more shameful when you do it to taunt your children. Well anyway, here you are my lovelies - the short beef rib - enjoy your toast!”

“Expensive drinks - £19.75 for a double g&t and a lager shandy...and this was the lager shandy! At least half of it was bubbles...I had to get a straw to try and remove them. People might ask why I didn't say anything...l I'd already paid and on leaving the drink at the bar with a here's your shandy...the server just walked off into the back. We were going to order food, but decided if this was the quality of the drinks, we'd be better going elsewhere. Nice location...but can't say much else positive about it. As a boater I always try and be positive about riverside pub's - but not being able to serve something as simple as a lager shandy, come on! Update: You can see from the owner response that they took this seriously! Nice apology..wait, sorry there wasn't one 😔”

“We had such a fantastic time visiting The Bridge. Everything about our meal was impressive from start to finish. The food was plated beautifully and tasted even better. I especially loved the fresh, vibrant beetroot base on the flatbread, which paired perfectly with the grilled skewers and red onion rings. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. It is the perfect spot for a casual afternoon drink and a delicious bite to eat. We will definitely be back soon.”

“More than just a pub, a true gem on the Thames. We recently moved away from Abingdon, and the Nags Head is the place we will miss the most. For over a year, this was our go-to for Sunday dinners and special occasions, including a wonderful Christmas Eve. The food is consistently incredible, but what truly sets this place apart is the staff. We have a mute autistic son who is very particular about his food, and the team here was always so accommodating and kind, making sure he had exactly what he needed without any fuss. It made our family outings stress-free and enjoyable. Between the top-tier service, the delicious meals, and the stunning location right on the River Thames, it’s easily the best spot in town. Beautiful inside and out. Please, if you’re in the area, do yourself a favor and visit. We’re going to miss you guys! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐”
