About The Ashvale

The Ashvale is a fish and seafood restaurant at 42-48 Great Western Rd in Aberdeen, open daily and set across several carpeted dining rooms. Fish suppers anchor the menu and are served with mushy peas. A 2-course lunch set offers haggis bon bons and smoked chowder as starters, which gives the midday menu a dedicated option beyond the fish suppers. A steak pie also sits on the menu. A teatime flyer set rounds out the offering, served with tea and toast or a choice of fruit juices.

Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips draws the most comment, and opinion splits sharply. Some diners describe the fish as incredibly fresh, juicy and perfectly cooked, and one praises the two-course lunch set, especially the haggis bon bons and smoked chowder. Others mention a generous, tasty steak pie and a teatime flyer with homemade toast, and one suggests booking ahead for busy peak times. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, polite and lovely, including on takeaway visits. The recurring complaint is the chips. Four reviewers describe them as undercooked, pale or hard in the centre, a few call the portions tiny, and some find the prices high for what arrives. Two reviewers say the Cullen skink was little more than potatoes, and one reports a replacement bowl with dried splashes of food and no manager on duty on a Sunday. One reviewer says the chips only come properly cooked if double cooked is requested.

“Utterly disgusting. Zero Stars. First bowl of Cullen Skink arrives, bowl of dried diced potatoes, no liquid whatsoever, sent back to kitchen. Replacement bowl arrives after a very long wait, bowl included dried thumbprints, dried splashes of food. Came with buttery from first bowl, again reheated, hard and inedible. Went to ask for Manager, was told no Manager on a Sunday, when asked whom was in charge, was told the two member's of staff on duty take it in turns. Not fair on customers and young unexperienced staff on duty. Waiting on Manager to call me on Monday”

“We visited on a Friday night and although early it was predominantly filled with elderly couples and similar aged groups. It seems that many are regulars as the staff seemed to be very personable with them with was nice to see. The portion sizes, especially the chips were small and the chips were also a bit too underdone which seems from other reviews to be a consistent complaint. The mushy peas we got lots of although weren’t very hot. All things considered my grandparents would have loved it here but honestly I won’t be rushing back. At around £40 for two fish suppers and two soft drinks it really emphasised how expensive a simple fish supper portion is now. It was all fine, nothing wrong with it but expensive for what it was. Service was excellent throughout though. All staff were very polite and attentive.”

“This was by far the worst fish and chips I've ever had. I should have known since the restaurant was empty when we arrived on a Friday lunch. And their sign claimed they were famous for their fish and chips. The chips were nearly raw and the fish was soggy and had no seasoning or flavor whatsoever. Will never come here again.”

“My partner got me chips and tuna mayo to take away. When we got home and I opened it up I noticed the chips looked incredibly pale. I tried three of them and all three were hard and not cooked properly. £6 wasted. Would not recommend.”

“Cullen skink was just a plate of potatoes. The "soup" just tasted of cream. It used to be much better.”
