Customer Review Summary

Haggis anchors the praise, from the haggis bon bons and the chicken and haggis meatballs to the chicken olive with haggis, though one diner found the bon bons closer to black pudding. Close behind are the pies, one described as massive with lots of meat in the filling and another a bread and black pudding pie served in a skillet. The Cullen skink, called rich and smoky, the pork schnitzel with paprika and mushroom sauce, and the fish and chips also earn mentions. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and welcoming, and several reviewers describe the food as good value. Desserts draw a more mixed response. The sticky toffee pudding was short on dates for one diner and tasted a little burnt in its dairy free version for another, and the cranachan and sundae did not impress. One reviewer found the Guinness served too cold for a stout. The sharpest complaint comes from a busy Easter Sunday, when drinks arrived with the starter and the Sunday roast came out lukewarm with a cold Yorkshire pudding, and the beef was full of fat and gristle, so both diners left most of it.

“They have six beers on tap. The Guinness I had was served ice cold- not the proper temperature for a stout. The bruschetta was delicious (though it really wasn't anything like the bruschetta you'd get in Italy- there was no tomato, onions or garlic- just tasty mushrooms). The hagus (it was spicy), venison stew and the vegetarian dish [sweet potato tart with carrots, parsnips, potatoes and broccoli rabe] were all good. For dessert we had the cranachan and the sundae- we didn't much care for either of them.”

“Great food and great location but most of all GREAT BATHROOMS! That's exactly what every bathroom should look like and it's the first time I see a place so well supplied. Well done!”

“Wow, just wow! Food was amazing, staff were amazing and the atmosphere was amazing! 2 courses for £27, couldn't believe the quality for that price. Maggie our server told us it was her first day but you'd never know. She was friendly, knowledgeable and did a fantastic job. I have coeliacs disease and Tony the general manager was very aware of allergens and put my mind at ease. We will make a trip back to Aberdeen just to eat here.”

“Had a lovey pre gig meal here with my husband. It was a Saturday night and the place was buzzing. It serves food traditional classics, done very well. My stand out dishes were the trio of seafood timbale and the pear and almond frangipane was beautiful. Excellent service and friendly staff. Reasonably priced. Looking forward to my next visit.”

“We were really disappointed with our visit on Easter Sunday. Although we had a booking, the restaurant was extremely busy and clearly understaffed—we still had to wait around 5 minutes to be seated. We were placed at a table for two that was very close to neighbouring tables, making it easy to hear other conversations and leaving little sense of privacy. After placing our order, we had to wait quite a while for drinks, which ended up arriving at the same time as our starter. The soup itself was lovely, but unfortunately things went downhill from there. Our mains (Sunday roast beef) arrived immediately after the soup, which made the service feel rushed. Sadly, the food was disappointing—the meal was only lukewarm, the Yorkshire pudding was cold, and the beef was full of fat and gristle. We both left most of it. No one checked on us during the meal, and the waitress only asked if everything was okay when clearing our plates, which felt too late. We were given the dessert menu quickly, but then waited around 20 minutes for someone to take our order. By that point, we’d had enough and just asked for the bill. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience. The waitress seemed rushed off her feet, so perhaps this was a staffing issue or just a particularly busy day—but unfortunately, it didn’t make for an enjoyable visit.”
