About Plonkers
Plonkers is a family-run bistro, wine bar and pub at 5 Cumberland St in York, near the River Ouse. The kitchen cooks hanging kebabs alongside home-cooked pies, with a Steak and Ale Pie among the mains. The Sunday roast comes with pork and chicken, gravy, Yorkshire pudding and a variety of vegetables. The bar pours cask ales, wines, premium spirits and cocktails, so the same room works for a meal or for drinks alone. An upstairs room opens for busy periods, and private function options are available for groups marking birthdays, celebrations or work gatherings. Dogs are welcome, and the team provides water for them.

Customer Review Summary
Sunday roast draws the strongest praise, with reviewers singling out the flavourful gravy, a perfect Yorkshire pudding, and juicy pork and chicken alongside a generous spread of vegetables. Close behind are the steak and ale pie, described as delicious with big portions, and the fish and chips. Others enjoyed the burgers, the nachos and a sharing platter of homemade nibbles with chunky chips, while cocktails such as the Aperol Spritz, Espresso Martini and Margarita earn high marks. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, and the pub is described as cosy, with an upstairs room for busy periods. Complaints are mostly practical. One diner found the online menu out of step with the physical one, including sandwiches that stop being served in the afternoon, and was never asked how they wanted their steak cooked. Food arrived slowly for that table. Another found the halloumi skewer sparse, the sweet potato fries ordinary and the pints expensive, and one disliked the soup of the day. One group noted that bar staff caught mistakes in a large party's orders before they reached the table.

“We honestly can’t thank Plonkers enough for helping us pull off the most brilliant surprise 40th birthday party! We found ourselves in a bit of a pickle, and Plonkers well and truly stepped up to the plate. What could have been a stressful situation turned into the most fantastic evening, and we’re so grateful to the entire team for making it happen. From the very first email, the communication was 10/10. Responses were incredibly quick, helpful and reassuring, which made such a difference when organising a surprise party. I even popped in unannounced beforehand to have a quick scout of the venue, and the bar staff were already so unbelievably friendly and helpful. It was clear from the outset that we were in good hands. On the night itself, the whole team were nothing short of exceptional. From helping us decorate the space to looking after everyone throughout the evening, nothing was too much trouble. Even the bouncer was in on the surprise and played his part brilliantly! The atmosphere was fantastic, the music was spot on, and everything just came together perfectly. The food was brilliant, too. We ordered a selection of plates from the main menu to dot around for everyone to tuck into, which worked perfectly. The nachos are an absolute must! They went down a treat. And the cocktails? Another 10/10. The Aperol Spritz, Espresso Martinis and Margaritas were all fantastic. I’m quite a fussy cocktail drinker (and, let’s just say, I’ve had enough practice to be annoyingly opinionated about them 😂), but these genuinely rank among some of the best I’ve had. I didn’t hear a single complaint about a drink all night! Even the other customers in the bar added to the fun, insisting on buying both the birthday girl and me (the organiser!) a drink. Everyone was in such great spirits, and the whole place had a brilliant, welcoming atmosphere. One of the things that really stood out was the thoughtfulness of the team, even after the party had finished. They took down all our decorations and packed everything safely into a bag for us to collect the following day. It might seem like a small thing, but when a team has already gone above and beyond to make your evening special, those extra little touches mean so much. Plonkers, you absolutely saved the day. Thank you for such a brilliant, memorable night. Your communication, hospitality and genuinely lovely team made all the difference, and we couldn’t be more grateful. If you’re looking for somewhere to host a party, I honestly couldn’t recommend Plonkers highly enough. Fantastic staff, great food, incredible cocktails and an atmosphere that made the whole evening. We just need to find another excuse to throw another party there!!! ❤️”

“We really enjoyed this place. Our burgers were very tasty. Although my southern fried burger wasn't spicy, it was still good. The best part was seeing the attention to detail of the bar staff. There was a large party in and we saw that there were a couple of issues with their food orders, which the bar staff spotted & dealt with before it reached their table.”
